Self Portrait (Colorful Faux-Naif Figurative Cityscape Oil Painting)

2016

About the Item

Colorful Faux Naive Style Cityscape Painting, Portrait of the Artist 'Self Portrait' painted by Darshan Russell in 1997 Oil on canvas, 21.5 x 24 inches framed with thin wood stripping Signed lower left Wire backing, ready to hang as is This contemporary abstracted naive style cityscape painting was made by Poughkeepsie, NY based artist Darshan Russell. Here the artist uses an explosive color palette to paint a self portrait in an urban setting. The artist's portrait is accompanied by other figures, with undefined facial features. The dominant colors of the painting come from the orange of the artist's sweater and the dusty blue of the sky. The figurative painting is framed with thin, natural wood stripping. There is wire backing for quick hanging. About the artist and her work: Hudson Valley artist Darshan Russell is a self-taught artist and has been exhibiting her work in many locations about the region. The colors and feeling of her compositions are greatly influenced by Matisse, but Russell’s inspiration comes directly from life and the simple scenes that surround her in Poughkeepsie, Kingston, Hudson and other Hudson River towns where she paints. Occasionally, Ms. Russell will paint cities that she has traveled to like New York, Baltimore, Portland and Paris, but the bulk of her work documents local scenes and local people. The photographs accompanying articles in the Poughkeepsie Journal or the New York Times inspire much of her figurative work. Portraits of Madelaine Albright and Mayor Dinkins are part of her repertoire as well the less notorious individuals. Ms. Russell’s paintings have a unique look that can be contributed to her practice of daily painting and years of dedication to develop a style all her own. She is as interested in landscapes as figures and city scenes. Her work has become well collected with the increased appreciation in folk art and naïve work.

  • Japan Japanese Garden by French naive outsider folk art primitive artist, 1975
    Located in Norwich, GB
A perfect painting for lovers of Japan and those of primitive/naive outside art. It is a work by an internatoanlly noted extraordinary artist with an extraordinary life. Maurice LOIRAND (1922-2008) is born into a working class family in Brittany, near the Atlantic coast coast in France. He starts working as a skilled labourer in the shipyards aged 15. Aged 20, when the Nazis start to occupy the country, he joins the Resistance movement, where he meets and befriends thinkers, painters and poets. He is thus introduced to an artistic and intellectual universe far removed from the world of his origins. Loirand finds himself drawn to art, and soon dedicates all his free time to learn how to paint. Completely self taught, he soon begins to exhibit his pictures alongside high level artists. He moves to Paris in the 1950s, and - although still working as a technician - paints all night. He finally becomes a full time artist in 1968. International travel and a multitude of exhibitions follow. He exhibits in Brazil, Argentina, and with Jean Tiroche Gallery in New York, among others. His work is now shown alongside works by Leger, Matisse and Picasso. The Collector's Guild New York Ltd commissions Maurice Loirand for several works of lithographic art. Loirand discovers Japan in the early 1970s, and decides to stay for 18 years. He marries Kazué SHIMOTORI, a Japanese poet...

Surreal depiction of a figure walking though a city by Marshall Woodall (American, b. 1958). The cityscape is represented in outlines only, creating the impression of being lit up in neon lights at night. The figure walking through the scene is an outline, reminiscent of a walk sign. Throughout the piece, there are hidden faces in the buildings. Signed, dated, and titled on verso along the stretcher: Marshall Woodall Aug 12/2019 'Abandoned by my family in Chicago' Unframed, but the edges are painted for a frame-less display. Canvas size: 16"H x 20"W Marshall Woodall (b. 1958) was born in Oklahoma City, OK. Woodall’s fascination with art began at an early age. His life has been a journey into self-expression and storytelling through music, drawing, and painting. ‘‘I am off the wall and have an unusual imagination. I think about things that people don’t always think about or notice.’’ Self-taught but inspired by Gary Larson...
