About the Item

'Near Les Mahago' oil on canvas (Framed) by David Martin RSW RGI (1922-2018) Image size 30 x 30 ins (76 x 76 cms) A fine example of the late David Martin's original works, well-known as a landscape and still life painter this is a very typical image by an artist considered to be one of the finest still life and landscape painters working in Scotland in his day. This is Lesmahago, a parish in Fife that David knew well, for details on the area please scroll down. David Martin (1922-2018) was one of the last of a great generation of painters who had graduated from the famous Glasgow School of Art in the 1940s & 50s. His studies in the early 1940s were interrupted by war service with the RAF and in 1946 he became an Instructor in art under the Forces Educational and Vocational Training Scheme. He resumed his training at Glasgow under David Donaldson (Later the Queen's Painter & Limner in Scotland) from 1946-48. He embarked on a successful career in art education until his retirement in 1983 when he devoted his time to painting full-time. He was an elected member of the Royal Glasgow Institute (1959), the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour (1961) and the Society of Scottish Artists (1991). A major retrospective of his work was held at Perth Museum and Art Gallery in 1999. He exhibited annually at the Royal Scottish Academy (from 1948) and the Royal Glasgow Institute. He also exhibited at the Royal Academy, The Hunting Art Prize exhibition and the Singer Friedlander Prize. David Martin's work is held in many public and corporate collections including those of The Scottish Arts Council; Scottish Television; the City of Edinburgh Art Collection; the Edinburgh Corporation; Robert Fleming & Company; Perth Museum and Art Gallery; East Kilbride Town Council; the Education Authorities of Edinburgh, Argyll, Dunbartonshire, Lanarkshire; the Dick Institute, Kilmarnock; Clydesdale Bank; Warburg Asset Management; Credit Lyonnais, London; The Earl of Moray; Dr T Shimizu; Lord MacFarlane; Lord Goold and Linklater & Paines, London. The subject is Lesmahago, described in an early Scottish topographical dictionary as ".....a parish in the Upper ward of the county of Lanark, 6 miles (S. W. by W.) from Lanark, and 22 (S. S. E.) from Glasgow; including the villages of Abbey-Green and Turfholm, Boghead, Crossford, Hazelbank, Kirkfield-Bank, Kirkmuirhill, and New Trows; and containing 6902 inhabitants. This place is supposed to have derived its appellation from a Celtic term signifying "garden," and from the name of its tutelar saint, who is said to have had a cell here about the 6th century. In 1140, a monastery was founded by David I. for Tyronensian monks, wherein he placed brethren from his abbey of Kelso, to which it became subordinate: the last remains were removed on the erection of the present church. The Parish is about twelve miles in length and nearly eight in breadth; it is bounded on the north-east by the river Clyde and towards the west and south-west rises into a range of hills, forming a boundary between the counties of Lanark and Ayr; There are springs of excellent water in various parts, several possessing medicinal properties; many of them issue in streams sufficiently powerful to give motion to mills and machinery." According to Wikipedia it is also the birth place in 1830 of Alexander Muir, composer of Canadian patriotic song "The Maple Leaf Forever", before emigrating to Canada as a child and more recently of actor Billy Boyd, famous for his role as the hobbit Pippin in The Lord of the Rings.
