About the Item

Victorian Scottish Landscape Figurative Oil Painting with Horse and Rider, Cattle, Sheep and Dog in River Landscape with Lincluden Abbey Ruins in background. Oil on Canvas on stretchers housed in a gold leaf frame. Signed left hand corner and dated 1870. There is a wealth of detail to explore in this charming painting, from the outfits and the tartan shawl to the eager looking dog on the pathway. Lincluden Abbey is on the River Cairn in the Dumfries region of Scotland, it was founded in the 1160's as a Benedictine Nunnery, probably by Uchtred, son of Fergus, Lord of Galloway. It was abandoned as a place of worship around 1700. Robert Burns visited Lincluden and was inspired to write a song "The Minstrel of Lincluden" (1794) ....."As i stood by yon roofless tower where the waterflow scents the dewy air, where the howlet mourns in her ivy bower and tells the moon her care" It remains one of the finest examples of Gothic Architecture in Scotland. Edwin Holt was a Historical and Genre Painter who specialised in Country Scenes and was especially adept at portraying rural life and country folk going about their daily business. His depictions of animals are especially acclaimed. Holt studied at the Royal Academy School and was awarded Silver Medal at the relatively young age of 24, from then on his work became highly sought after and he regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy and the Royal Institute of Painters. He lived most of his life in London and the surrounding Counties
