About the Item
Painted en plein air in the heart of the Bavarian Forest, this piece captures a moment of deep stillness and quiet beauty.
"I remember standing there early in the morning, surrounded by the soft rustling of pine needles and the scent of wet grass," said Elena Bulatova about this artwork. "The light was gentle, breaking through the tall trees and casting long shadows across the meadow. It wasn’t dramatic, but rather subtle — a kind of light that speaks in whispers instead of grand gestures."
"What moved me to paint this scene was the contrast between the strong verticals of the pine trees and the tender openness of the clearing. There was a peaceful rhythm in how the light danced across the field and how the tree trunks framed the view like columns in a cathedral of nature."
"I worked quickly, yet attentively, to capture that fleeting harmony before the sun climbed too high. I painted directly on canvas, stretched and fixed into a natural wood frame. This piece is a quiet homage to the still moments we often overlook — when the forest seems to pause, breathe, and simply exist."
The painting itself measures 38x38 cm; with the frame, it’s 43x43 cm.
Elena Bulatova is a Munich-based painter working primarily in oil, often in the alla prima technique. Born in Moscow, Russia in 1981, she received early training in a children’s art school, laying the foundation for a lifelong dedication to painting.
Her artistic practice is rooted in academic traditions, yet she continuously seeks freedom and individuality in her work. Bulatova often paints en plein air, working directly from life to capture the essence of a moment with immediacy and sensitivity. She is especially drawn to subjects found in her everyday surroundings—landscapes, people, portraits, and the human figure—exploring the natural beauty and quiet poetry of the visible world.
Over the past twenty years, Bulatova has developed her skills through a combination of self-directed study and mentorship with experienced artists. She has studied in diverse settings, including traditional icon painting in Moscow and the AktHof in Munich. Currently, she is enrolled as an external student at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich, deepening her engagement with classical technique and contemporary practice.

Elena Bulatova (1981) is a Russian artist living in Munich, Germany. After fifteen years of painting dedicatedly and hermetically - alternately self-taught and under the guidance of older painters - Elena Bulatova wishes to share her practice with the world. In her constant self-study, Bulatova has sought instruction from a variety of sources - from the Eastern Orthodox icon painting school in Moscow to the Academy of Fine arts in Munich. She is currently enrolled externally at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich to better understand the modern side of the art world. She believes that the true value of art lies in the meditative process that goes into creating such a work and in the years of mastery that a person can undertake and overcome to become a master in any field. The themes of her work are: nature, animals and authentic human beauty.
