A woman returns from the beach followed by two others in the distance. The painting reads as nearly abstract, dominated by three horizontal bands of color. The figures occupy the edge of the composition, offsetting the warm geometric landscape.

About the Artist
Artist Elliot Coatney creates warm, impressionist landscapes inspired by his surroundings in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Carolina. He began drawing and painting in watercolor at a young age under the direction of his grandmother, an amateur painter. Throughout his school years, he learned the art trade as a studio assistant for a local painter. Today, he works from a home studio in the mountains with old warped hardwood floors covered in paint splatters. "It's cramped and cluttered, but somehow there's always room for me and my children who love to join me with their paints and brushes and other creative projects," says Elliot. His artwork has been featured in juried shows throughout the southeast, including at the North Carolina Museum of Art and the Southern Appalachian Artist Guild.
