About the Item

A masterful oil painting depicting a European harbor scene with sailboats on the clear water by European artist Erich Paulsen. This particular scene is a lush depiction of boats docked on the calm blue water with clouds in the distance with much depth and detail. Paulsen was known for his pastoral landscapes depicting scenes from daily life; notably provincial European towns. He also created numerous views of city life during his stay in Paris. This piece is an excellent example of the works produced during the 1950s with the use of a rich color pallet, pallet knife, and layers of paint giving this work such a stunning representation of countryside life. The way he uses flecks of light dashed onto the canvas creates a joy for the viewer to experience. This painting is signed by the artist lower right and it comes housed in a beautiful antique wood frame with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 20 x 23.5 inches Frame measures 28 x 32 inches Erich Paulsen was born in the small town of Treunbrietzen, in the region Bundesland of Brandenburg just outside Berlin on February 23, 1932. He spent his early childhood in the region called "Mark Brandenburg", known for its pine trees and uncounted small lakes. Attracted to the arts since childhood, Paulsen received his formal education in art at the Fine Arts Academy in Lower Saxony from which he graduated with honors. After the war, his family moved west in search of safety. They settled in Hamburg, where the aspiring young artist attended the Master Class for Painting, Mesterchule der Malerei. He studied under Professor Joseph Burger in Munich at the Kunst-Akademie and also at the Art Academy in Berlin. Paulsen continued his painting and studies and later graduated with honors. Deeply impressed by the region of his childhood, Paulsen draws upon these memories to create his paintings. From the countryside to the shores of the Baltic Sea, many of his subjects are reminiscences of this romantic part of Germany. Paulsen chooses primarily landscapes, genre, and coastal scenes as subjects for his paintings. His images of quaint old-world villages are compelling for they seem to catapult the viewer back in time to simpler, more wholesome days. Implementing the palette knife technique and using assured impasto strokes to apply bold colors, this artist's works are distinctive and captivate anyone's imagination. Following his graduation from the Academy, he made several study trips seeking inspiration and new subject material for his compositions and traveled extensively through northern Germany, Scandinavia, the Netherlands, Italy, Spain, and the Alps. He is well known for excellent landscapes, and mountain landscapes, and also has been very successful in painting harbor scenes. His colorful canvases have won much recognition at various exhibitions in his own country as well as in the rest of Europe and the United States, and his paintings have been on exhibit all over the world in such major cities as Munich, Hamburg, Paris, London, New York, Chicago, and Sydney. International art critics have praised his works and today, they can be found in many prestigious private and municipal art collections. PROVENANCE: Private collection Orlando, Fl; Lilac Gallery Collection. The piece will be stamped from Lilac Gallery on its verso.

"Marina in the French Riviera" Post-Impressionist Sea Shore Boats Oil Painting
By Lucien Adrion
Located in New York, NY
This work by Lucien Adrion is a wonderful representation of his Post-Impressionist works at the seashore by the French Riviera. Using a bright palette of colors, Adrion executes this piece with much attention to detail with many boats situated along the marina. There are palm trees and buildings placed in the distance, as we can feel the warmth of the sun contrasted with the cool breeze of the water. The boats are wonderfully executed by the artist in a very whimsical way that leaves us with an essence of enjoyment from that sunny day at the marina. As this tourist destination was a favorite of the artist to find inspiration and highly attractive subjects and compositions to represent, we can find several of his works like this subject and others. The piece is signed by the artist lower left and it comes housed in a French giltwood frame with linen liner and hanging wire on verso ready to be displayed. Art measures 19 x 23.5 inches Frame measures 27 x 32 inches Lucien Adrion was born May 25, 1889 in Strasbourg, France. He was a French Post-Impressionist painter, draftsman, and printmaker known for his depictions of the French countryside and beaches, as well as Parisian life including landscape, still life, figure, and landmarks paintings. He began his initial studies in Strasbourg as a technical draughtsman. In 1907, at the age of 18, he left his hometown Strasbourg and traveled to Paris, where he found employment in a large drafting company to work as a fashion illustrator. Adrion changed his mind upon arrival and rather than working for a large company, he decided to peruse his artistic career by traveling to London, Munich, and Frankfurt. As the World War broke out he had to go to Berlin, where he studied as an engraver with Hermann Struck, who was also the teacher of Marc Chagall. He remained in Berlin until the war ended and after the demobilization, Lucien would study engraving under Franz Ritter von Struck...
