"The Wild Coast - Big Sur" Contemporary Seascape in Oil on Canvas

2009

About the Item

"The Wild Coast - Big Sur" Contemporary Seascape in Oil on Canvas Vibrant coastal seascape by notable California artist Erin Gafill (American, b. 1963). Brightly colored hills cascade towards the sea, depicted in bright yellow-orange, as if reflecting the glow of the sky. A line of dark green trees follows one of the ridges, divided by a small house with a white roof. The bright red underpaint has been allowed to show through in many areas, creating the effect of a glowing outline. Erin's works at the Carmel Art Association range from $5,000-$6,000 for similar length works. Signed "Erin" in the lower right corner. Signed, dated, and titled on verso: Erin Gafill ©2009 The Wild Coast - Big Sur Written on verso: painted for + inspired by "Jasmine Dogs" a novel by J.W. Winslow This painting was used as the cover art for the "Jasmine Dogs" We can include another of Winslow's books that has one of Erin's similar paintings on the front and back cover. Erin Lee Gafill (American, b. 1963) was born in Big Sur, California. She is an award-winning writer, painting, and teacher. Her great-great grandmother was Jane Gallatin Powers, who had the first artist's studio in Carmel and who worked side by side with her husband Frank to create the artist's colony, which is today Carmel-by-the-Sea. Gafill’s grandparents Lolly and Bill Fassett built Nepenthe Restaurant in Big Sur, a legendary watering hole for artist, poets, writers, and bohemians. Erin Gafill has taught art-making, writing, and creativity programs to children and adults up and down California's central coast. In 2001, Gafill was honored with an invitation to be chosen as the first American artist-in-residence of the Hamada International Children's Art Museum, Hamada, Japan. Works from this trip were displayed at the Monterey Museum of Art. She is on the creative arts faculty for both Esalen Institute and Rancho La Puerta, Mexico.
