Erwin Carl Wilhelm Günther by Erwin Carl Wilhelm Günther, steamship and sailboats on the sea
About the Item
Erwin Carl Wilhelm Günther (Hamburg, 1864 - Düsseldorf, 1927)
Steamship and sailboats on the sea
Oil on canvas, 65 x 100 cm
Signed and dated "(19)15" in lower left corner
The painting is signed and dated "Günther Erwin (19)15" at lower left.
The artist was born in Hamburg in 1864, then studied at the Düsseldorf Academy. Long trips to Europe and Africa provided him with subjects for his paintings, which he began exhibiting from 1891 in Munich and 1893 in Berlin. His activity is aimed almost entirely at the depiction of navies, which are the subjects for which he is best known. Museums that hold his paintings include the Kunsthalle in Düsseldorf, his adopted city. The painting in question represents, an example of his most typical production. It depicts two boats in the foreground and a steamer in the background, while a pier with its typical structures is shown on the right. All three of these boats, the first of which bears the inscription "Marie Stern," leave the shore in the direction of the open sea. Observing the steamship in the distance, one has the perception that it is floating, as if propelled by the high waves rippling the surface of the sea. The day, in fact, is windy, as precisely evidenced not only by the waves, but also by the movement of the boats that seem to travel their way with some effort.
The palette employed by Günther is quite basic, so much so that the painting appears to be almost a monochrome. It is the grays, in fact, albeit in different shades and combinations, that are the protagonists of the palette, employed in the boats, the wharf, the long steamer smoke, and the waves themselves.
The painter's skill in a subject so congenial to him is evident in the depiction of the boats, depicted with attention to detail, but also in that of the surface of the sea, rippled by the waves, which form a white foam. Subjects such as these, with the sea as the protagonist, met with considerable success in early 20th century production.

Carl Friedrich Deiker was the son of Friedrich Deiker, a painter and drawing teacher at the high school. His older brother, Johannes Deiker, with whom he learned to draw after their father’s death in 1843, was a painter specialising in hunting scenes.
Deiker attended the Hanau drawing Academy, where he was a pupil of the director Theodor Pélissier (1794-1863), and then studied at Johann Wilhelm Schirmer’s studio in Carlsruhe.

Dance of the Nymphs
By Paul Desire Trouillebert
Located in New Orleans, LA
This lyrical landscape entitled Dance of the Nymphs was composed by the French Barbizon painter Paul Désiré Trouillebert. A joyful scene of nymphs dancing the morning fog, the work closely resembles an important work by the great Camille Corot, which is now housed at the Musée d'Orsay (Paris). Renowned for his unique individuality that toed the line between the traditional and modern, Corot and his landscapes helped pave the way for an entire generation of Impressionists who followed him. Trouillebert perfectly captures the poetic atmosphere of Corot’s groundbreaking works, while also imbuing this scene with a freshness and character that is all his own.
Trouillebert's oil on canvas is exemplary of the tradition of historical painting. The work perfectly combines a realistic depiction of the natural world with a spirited romanticism as his idealized nymph figures frolic playfully beneath a crisp morning sky. As a whole, it is a lovely composition executed with a level of skill and artistry that proves Trouillebert's exceptional talent in the arts.
Born in Paris in 1831, Paul Désiré Trouillebert was a student of the academic painters Ernest Hébert...
