About the Item

Sun reflecting on the snowy mountains at Meadows Valley, Idaho in this mid century winter landscape by Violet Root (Esther Florence Violet King Root; American, b. 1896). Signed "V. Root" lower right corner. Handwritten title and printed address label for "Mrs. J. V. Root" on verso. Presented in a giltwood frame. Image, 16"H x 20"W; frame dimensions 20"H x 24"W x 2"D. Esther Florence Violet King Root born Santa Rosa, California. She spent many years camping and fishing throughout California and Idaho. She lived in California, Arizona and Idaho. She exhibited in Bosie, Idaho at Bearsleys Gallery during the 1940’s through the 1950’s. She loved to paint landscapes and still life paintings. Her husband worked for a museum and was the associate secretary of the YMCA for many years, and the family would spent many summers at YMCA Camps. Of Meadows Valley, a 1911 article stated: "Imagine a vast, almost level, oblong tract of nearly 30,000 acres, about sixteen miles in length by four or five miles in average width, surrounded on all sides by tree clad mountain ranges, like some titanic amphitheatre." Violet Root has beautifully captured this valley in her painting.

Image size: 27.25"H x 28.38"W Nancy Patricia Coe (American, 1932-1998), was born in San Jose, California to Henry Surtcliff Coe and spent most of her life on Rancho San Felipe in a two-story, brick colonial residence, originally built by her father, on a commercial cattle ranch. With its weeping willow trees and picturesque red barn, it made for a happy home nestled in the heart of San Felipe Valley. Henry Coe State Park is named after her Grandfather Henry Willard Coe. She studied art at Stanford University and graduated in the 1950's. While there, she met S. Gainer Pillsbury, MD, a fellow alumnus, whom she married on June 19, 1956. While an accomplished user of charcoals and Conte crayons, Ms. Coe painted in primarily in oils, showing and winning awards in Reno, Nevada in the early 1960's. Her works, including landscapes and portraits, have been featured in numerous newspaper articles in the Reno Gazette-Journal. Her palette-knife painting of Salvador and Virginia Prado, two ranch hands, was featured on the cover of a Mexican-American history textbook, A Guide to the Study of the Mexican-American by Feliciano Rivera (1969) and published at San Jose State University. Her paintings of Sada S. Coe (her aunt) and Henry “Harry” W. Coe, Jr. are featured in the museum at Henry Coe State Park in Morgan Hill...

This artwork " Winter Scene, Lake Tahoe" c.1970 is a oil painting on canvas by Russian artist Irina Belotelkin Roublon 1913-2009. It is signed lower right by the artist. The canvas size is 16 x 20 inches. It is in very good condition. About the artist. Irina Belotelkin Roublon, née Roudakoff, was born in Elisavetgrad, Ukraine to the Russian noblesse ancienne, descendant of Catherine the Great, she was a student at the Mariinsky Noble Ladies' Institute , Novocherkassk, Russia. She was orphaned at the time of the Russian Civil War after her father, General Paul Roudakoff, was fatally wounded in battle; 5 days later her mother died of typhus. Still unaware of her parents' death, and after witnessing her two sisters' deaths from starvation, the young Irina, then 8 years old, made her way over 1,000 kilometers, alone and through many privations to Moscow and the Estonian embassy there, with whom her Estonian uncle Volodya Blonsky had made arrangements. After a year in Moscow, and appeals to the Estonian consul, Irina was aided in a dramatic escape from the Soviet Union, to her aunt Anna Blonsky Lassburg (1882–1940) and her husband Doctor Genrick Lassburg in Tallinn, Estonia. Eventually, after in 1929, traveling through Ellis Island and admitted as a student, of voice studies, she joined her brother who had settled, in 1923, in the United States. Irina came to San Francisco during the Second World War, Among Irina's devotions were ballet and opera. She often entertained friends Rudolf Nureyev, Mikhail Baryshnikov, and Sergei Leiferkus when they were in town. Natalia Makarova and Yuri Possokhov were often guests at Irina's Russian Christmas and Easter parties. From the early 1960s through the late 1980s, Irina studied and prolifically created still life and portrait paintings in oil and water color, excelling in flower compositions. She held studio and feature exhibitions; she competed and won prizes. Her work is in holdings throughout the San Francisco Bay area, Europe and Russia. In 1965 she undertook private study with two prominent Russian painters, including Serge Ivanoff; she executed a portrait of her two masters. She cherished her portrait as executed by Serge Ivanoff.
