About the Item

Bustling Dockside by Fanch Lel (French b. 1930) size: 9 x 10.5 inches oil painting on board, unframed condition: the painting is in very good condition. It has previously been stored in the artists studio. Provenance: all the paintings we have for sale by this artist have come from the artists estate and have had no previous owners at all. Description: This painting depicts a lively dockside scene, with several boats moored along the quay and figures dressed in casual or work attire, possibly sailors or dockworkers, engaging in conversation or attending to the boats. The use of bright, varied colors gives the painting a sense of movement and vibrancy, suggesting a bustling harbor. The boats are depicted with loose brushstrokes, emphasizing the shapes and contours rather than fine details, in an impressionistic style. The water is painted in shades of blue and green, reflecting the colors of the sky, and the distant boats add depth to the composition. The figures, one dressed in yellow and others in more subdued tones, bring a human element to the otherwise maritime-focused scene, giving it life and energy. We are pleased to offer a significant collection of original works by Fanch Lel, a celebrated Breton artist known for his captivating depictions of Brittany’s landscapes, markets, and traditional life. Fanch Lel’s paintings, primarily executed in oil and gouache, evoke the serenity and charm of the French countryside, with a particular emphasis on the region's coastal and rural beauty.
