In this 1998 street market scene by French painter Fanch Lel, a lively crowd gathers for a brocante—or antique fair—outside the medieval church of Dinan, a picturesque walled town in Brittany. The composition captures the bustle of weekend commerce, with figures browsing under large striped parasols, mingling in front of a richly detailed Gothic church façade.
The architecture, though loosely rendered, clearly evokes Dinan’s famous Saint-Malo church, with its stained-glass windows and tall spires peeking through the soft pastel haze. Lel brings the atmosphere to life with expressive brushstrokes and a muted but dynamic palette: greys, soft ochres, and pinks are punctuated by pops of red, mustard yellow, and white in the crowd.
