About the Item

Title: French Impressionist Oil Painting of Figures at the Beach at St Lunaire By Fanch Lel (French b. 1930) Size: 4 x 6.25 inches (height x width) Signed: Yes Oil painting on cardboard, unframed Condition: The painting is in good condition. Provenance: All the paintings we have for sale by this artist have come from the artists estate and have had no previous owners at all. Description: This impressionist painting by Fanch Lel captures a vibrant coastal scene, portraying a group of people navigating the shore during what appears to be a grande marée—a high tide. The figures are depicted in various postures, likely engaged in activities such as gathering or harvesting from the ocean. One figure in a bright yellow jacket stands out prominently, while others, donning darker clothing, blend into the coastal environment. The sea, though not the focal point, is a tranquil green, contrasting with the brighter colors in the sky and the figures’ clothing. Saint-Lunaire, located on the northern coast of Brittany, France, is known for its dramatic tides, particularly during the grande marée, when the sea can rise significantly. This unique phenomenon draws both locals and tourists, making it a key subject in coastal French artwork. The village, rich in maritime culture, has inspired many artists due to its scenic beauty and historical significance. The use of light, soft strokes in the sky and the textured details on the shore emphasize the fleeting nature of moments like these. Lel's impressionistic style captures the dynamic energy of the figures interacting with the coastal environment while maintaining a balance between detail and abstraction. This piece, created in 2005, offers a glimpse into Brittany's maritime traditions and the natural beauty of the French coastline.
