About the Item

Title: French Impressionist Oil Painting of Onlookers Watching Harness Racing By Fanch Lel (French b. 1930) Size: 8.75 x 10.75 inches (height x width) Signed: Yes Oil painting on board, unframed Condition: The painting is in good condition, with minor signs of aging. Provenance: All the paintings we have for sale by this artist have come from the artists estate and have had no previous owners at all. Description: This dynamic painting by Fanch Lel (1992) captures the thrill and motion of harness racing, a beloved sport often associated with tradition and skill. Against a soft, dusky sky, three horses charge forward, each guided by a skilled jockey in a sulky, a lightweight cart used for this type of racing. The silhouettes of the horses, highlighted in deep blacks and browns, contrast strikingly with the gentle colors of the background, creating a scene brimming with energy and anticipation. The jockeys’ postures and the horses' determined strides convey a vivid sense of movement and concentration, immersing the viewer in the fast-paced ambiance of the race. The background is subtly detailed, with hints of an audience and greenery, emphasizing the communal aspect of the sport while allowing the foreground action to command attention. Lel’s choice of a softer color palette for the surroundings amplifies the intensity of the racing scene, while the layering of the paint on the horses adds texture, lending a sense of realism to their powerful forms. This piece beautifully captures both the excitement of the race and the cultural significance of harness racing within the rustic landscape.
