About the Item
Jim's of Lambertville is proud to offer this painting by Faye Swengel Badura (1904 – 1991).
Faye Swengel Badura was born in Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 1904. She began her art studies at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts in 1923, under the tutelage of Daniel Garber. While there, Swengel Badura was put in charge of selecting Academy students to receive scholarships for studies at the Barnes Foundation. In 1926, she won the Academy’s prestigious Cresson Traveling Scholarship for study in Europe and spent four months abroad in England, France, and Italy. In addition to her education at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Swengel Badura studied at the Barnes Foundation as well as with avant-garde modernist painter, Arthur B. Carles.
While at the Academy, Faye met fellow art student, Ben Badura, and in 1928, the couple married. They lived first in Reading, Pennsylvania, then Harrisburg, before moving to Centre Bridge in 1930. In 1937, the Baduras bought a property on Main Street in New Hope. The building served as an art studio, frame shop, and their home for more than 50 years.
Swengel Badura was the recipient of many prestigious awards during her career, including the Mary Smith Prize and a Gold Medal from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Her work was exhibited in major venues such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York; the National Academy of Design; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Corcoran Gallery of Art in Washington D.C.; the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts; the Cincinnati Art Museum; the Woodmere Art Museum; and the Phillips Mill Community Association. Faye Swengel Badura’s artwork is in the permanent collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, the Woodmere Art Museum, and the James A. Michener Art Museum.

Illustrated in "New Hope for American Art"
Harry Leith-Ross (1886 - 1973)
The son of an English father and a Dutch mother, Harry Leith-Ross was born in the British Colony of Mauritius, an island in the Indian Ocean a thousand miles off the southeast coast of Africa. His first formal art instruction began in England under Stanhope Forbes, followed by studies with Jean Paul Laurens at the Academie Julian in Paris. Leith-Ross came to the United States to enroll at the National Academy of Design in New York City in 1910, and then to Woodstock, in 1913. It was in Woodstock at the Art Students League, under the tutelage of Birge Harrison and John F. Carlson, that Leith-Ross would receive the training that most influenced his career as an artist.
There he formed a lifelong friendship with fellow artist, John Folinsbee. The two artists shared a studio during this time and participated in several joint exhibitions exclusively featuring their work, including an exhibit at the Louis Katz...

Vermillion at Lee's Ferry ( Plein Air Landscape painting sky blue terracotta)
By Jane Chapin
Located in Cody, WY
This is a 'Plein Air" landscape Painting by Jane Chapin as seen in the viewing room exhibition on Silas VON MORISSE GALLERY.
“Plein-Air” is the French expression to describe the act of painting in situ within the landscape, capturing the ever changing weather and light with tonal qualities, colour, loose brushwork and softness of form... The practice of “Plein Air Painting” goes back for centuries but was truly made into an art form by the French Impressionists such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro, Alfred Sisley, and Pierre-Auguste Renoir who were advocating of plein air painting. Much of their work was done outdoors in the diffuse light of a large white umbrella. Another major proponent of Plein Air was Jean Baptiste Camille Corot whom Claude Monet considered as “The only One Master here”. Corot provides a transition from the sharp academic style that ruled in his day with focus on the natural world and the lyrical expressiveness of one's work. With her "Plein Air Paintings", Jane Chapin is part of one of the largest art movements in history. Her paintings carry human emotions. We can read her moods and feelings with places that carry deep remembrances for the artist that go beyond the descriptive.
"My paintings grow from observing and interpretating light as it emerges from, surrounds and reflects on everyday people and scenes. They seek to remind us of the beauty of our common surroundings, regardless of where we are." - Jane Chapin
