About the Item

Félix-François Georges Ziem 1821-1911 French On the Steps of the Salute, Venice Signed “Ziem” (lower left) Oil on panel The city of Venice was a favorite subject for French artist Félix-François Georges Ziem. In this brilliantly atmospheric scene, entitled On the Steps of the Salute, Venice, the artist portrays the historic city's Grand Canal bustling with sailboats and gondolas as the sun rises. The composition celebrates both the grandeur of the city's architecture—especially its famous cathedrals—as well as its everyday commerce, while also serving as a beautiful study of light and color. This work captures a colorful crowd gathered before one of Venice's most iconic cathedrals, Santa Maria della Salute. Ziem renders the city's iconic architecture, sparkling waters and wide open sky with lively brushstrokes, bringing the radiant composition to life. One of Ziem's most magnificent paintings, On the Steps of the Salute reflects his mastery of the Barbizon School's realism, infused with a visionary style that is all his own. Ziem was an eccentric spirit, who originally studied architecture in Dijon and worked as a surveyor on the construction of the Marseille canal before his watercolors attracted the patronage of Ferdinand-Philippe, Duc d’Orleans. In 1842, he visited Italy for the first time and instantly fell in love with Venice, where he would return throughout his life. Throughout his highly accomplished career, Ziem would exhibit regularly at the Paris Salon, travel extensively and earn the support of a broad range of important patrons who were entranced by his landscapes. His views of Venice, however, were certainly his most compelling and sought-after works both during his lifetime and still today. Several of the artist's Venice scenes belong to some of the world's most prestigious museums, including the Louvre, the Musée d'Orsay, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago. Ziem was so revered in his day that in 1864 he was honored to have Queen Victoria under his tutelage, and in 1857 he was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor, rising to the rank of Officer in 1878. This work comes with a certificate of authenticity from the Association Félix Ziem and will be published in the forthcoming catalogue raisonné. Concours de Chiens au Promenade by Otto Eerelman
By Otto Eerelman
Located in New Orleans, LA
Otto Eerelman 1839-1926 Dutch Concours de Chiens au Promenade Watercolor on paper Signed “O. Eerelman 1904” (lower left) A tour de force watercolor by celebrated Dutch artist Otto Eerelman, one of 19th-century Europe's most popular and important animal portraitists, this charming composition captures a bustling cross-section of fashionable elites walking their equally fashionable canine companions. Eerleman takes care to render the detailed attire of his subjects, complete with plumed hats and layers of lace trim. The artist paints the plethora of pets in equally painstaking detail, capturing the nuances of each different breed represented. Eerelman mastered the art of depicting not only the dogs’ physical characteristics but also their unique expressions and personalities. His wealthy clientele would bring their pets to his home in The Hague where they would live for a period of time while having their portraits done, allowing for a remarkably true-to-life portrayal. This energetic watercolor, with its profusion of color and texture, harnesses the affluence of its subjects and the leisurely whimsy of their luxurious lives. Hailing from Groningen, Netherlands, Eerelman was dubbed the “Northern Rembrandt” during his lifetime. He received his artistic training at the Academy Minerva in Groningen, the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp and then private lessons in the studio of the great Lawrence Alma Tadema. He successfully captured the attention of the Dutch court, particularly Princess Wilhelmina...

No Love Without Envy by Eugene Von Blaas
By Eugene von Blaas
Located in New Orleans, LA
Eugen von Blaas Italian I 1843-1932 No Love Without Envy Signed and dated "Eugen von Blaas 1901" (lower right) Oil on canvas Eugen von Blaas masterfully captured the spirit and charm of Venice, and No Love Without Envy stands as one of his most exceptional compositions. Larger and more finely detailed than many of his works, this grand painting reflects his unparalleled mastery of light, color and narrative. Rich in detail and emotion, this scene is believed to feature a stylized self-portrait of the artist alongside his wife, Paola Prina. Set in a sun-drenched Venetian courtyard, the composition brims with life and intrigue. At its center, an orange seller—modeled by Prina—engages in a flirtatious exchange with an admirer, the artist himself, while three onlookers observe with amusement and envy. The interplay of light and texture is remarkable: von Blaas' exquisite brushwork renders the delicate lace, sumptuous fabrics and intricately adorned garments with near-photographic precision, while the soft flesh tones contrast beautifully against the timeworn stonework of Venice. This attention to detail, combined with the work’s luminous palette, creates a sense of immediacy and warmth that defines the best of von Blaas' Venetian genre paintings. Born in 1843 to Austrian parents in Italy, von Blaas was raised in a household steeped in artistic tradition. His father, Karl Blaas, was a renowned portraitist and history painter, while his brother specialized in military scenes. When Karl was appointed professor at the Venice Academy of Fine Arts, the family relocated to the floating city—a move that profoundly shaped von Blaas’ artistic vision. Though he studied in Rome, Vienna and Paris, it was Venice that remained his greatest muse. Captivated by its light, architecture and everyday moments of romance and social interplay, he became the foremost painter of Venetian genre scenes. During Venice’s Austrian rule, von Blaas adopted the Italianized name “Eugene de Blaas...
