Ferdinand du Puigaudeau 1864-1930 French Berger et ses moutons au soleil couchant (A Shepherd and his Sheep at Sunset) Signed "F. du Puigaudeau" (lower left) Oil on canvas Ferdinand du Puigaudeau is celebrated for his near-magical depictions of light and atmosphere, and the present work displays his mastery over the rising sun. A remarkable range of purple, violet, blue, orange, red and yellow hues are captured over the horizon, casting an ethereal glow over a shepherd and his flock. With influences ranging from Gauguin to the Impressionists to Pointillism, du Puigaudeau developed a distinctive style all his own. Like the Pointillists, he applied color to his canvases in separate, complementary tones, though he used a variety of different brushstrokes to accurately achieve the effects of light. Thus, the artist's canvas emerges as an aesthetic meditation on the symbolism and poetry of nature. Known for vibrant depictions of country fairs, fireworks and sunsets, du Puigaudeau merged elements of Symbolism and Neo-Impressionism with traditional Impressionism, contributing a unique aesthetic to the movement. Born in 1864 in Nantes, France, he was largely self-taught before arriving at the famous artist colony of Pont-Aven in 1886, where he met Paul Gauguin. Through famed art dealer Paul Durand-Ruel, Edgar Degas obtained a du Puigaudeau painting, and Degas and du Puigaudeau would become good friends. During the early 1900s, the artist traveled to Venice where he produced a number of important canvases depicting myriad sights of the city. Today, his works are held in the collections of the Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum in Madrid and the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Quimper in France, among others.
