About the Item

This vibrant oil on canvas painting by noted German-American artist Ferdinand Kaufmann captures a breathtaking mountain landscape—likely inspired by the rugged beauty of Colorado or California. A rushing river cuts through a sunlit canyon, framed by lush trees and towering mountain peaks. The piece is signed by the artist in the lower left corner. Rendered in earthy greens and warm browns, the painting embodies classic American Impressionism with loose, expressive brushstrokes and atmospheric light, evoking the serenity and grandeur of the natural world in summer. About the Artist: Ferdinand Kaufmann (1864–1942) was born in Oberhausen, Bavaria, and immigrated to the U.S. in the early 1880s, eventually settling in Pittsburgh. In 1896, he studied in Paris at the prestigious Académie Julian under masters such as Jean-Paul Laurens, Benjamin Constant, and William-Adolphe Bouguereau. After returning to the U.S. in 1902, Kaufmann became active in the Pittsburgh art scene before relocating to Southern California in 1921. He settled in Pasadena by 1934 and exhibited with the Pasadena Art Institute and the Laguna Beach Art Association. His work is celebrated for its expressive landscapes and seascapes depicting California, Colorado, Arizona, and coastal New England. This piece is a beautiful example of Kaufmann’s ability to blend European technique with the raw, natural beauty of the American West.

About the Artist: Irene Fowler (1884-1969) was an influential figure in the development of Denver's art scene. Born in Illinois, she moved to Denver where she became a public school teacher and a founding member of the Denver Artist’s Guild (now the Colorado Artist’s Guild). Throughout her career, Fowler painted stunning landscapes in oil and watercolor, most often working en plein air to capture the natural beauty of Colorado's diverse scenery. Known for her landscapes of Colorado, Fowler expertly depicted the unique features of the region: towering mountains, quaking Aspen trees, and rustic mining towns. Her work is marked by an exceptional understanding of the thin mountain air and luminous sunshine that make Colorado’s landscape so striking. Fowler was a prominent figure in the Denver art community, exhibiting her works at major venues such as the Schlier Gallery, Chappell House, the University Club...

Early Modernist River Landscape with Trees and Mountains WPA artist
By Maurice Kish
Located in Surfside, FL
In artist's hand painted frame. signed and dated. Genre: Modern Subject: Landscape Medium: Oil Surface: Canvas Country: United States Dimensions w/Frame: 23" x 30.25" The imagery of Maurice Kish (1895-1987), whether factories or carousels, reliably subverts expectations. His vision hovers just around the unraveling edge of things, where what is solid and clear becomes ambiguous. He is fascinated, often delighted, by the falling apart. This unexpected, fresh perspective results in oddly affecting pictures of a now long-gone New York. Born Moishe in a town called Dvinsk, Russia (what is now Daugavpils, Latvia), Kish came with his family to New York when he was in his teens. The family settled in Brownsville, and for the rest of Kish’s life Brooklyn remained his home, though he moved from one neighborhood to another. He was close to his parents, who recognized his talent and supported his desire to become an artist. Kish attended the National Academy of Design as well as Cooper Union. His fellow students included many other immigrants and children of immigrants who were particularly receptive to the Modernism coming from Europe. As his career progressed, Kish himself applied different strains of Modernism to different purposes. For him, the story was held above all else. For years, Kish used the skills he acquired in art school to earn his living at a Manhattan glass...
