About the Item

Ferdinand Kaufmann (1864 1942) Harbor Scene with Boats oil/canvas, laid to board, masonite. Signed lower right. 11.5 x 12.5 unframed, 15.75 x 19.75 framed A nice marine by Kaufmann that has a beautiful painterly look and feel to it with slight surface soiling and grime. Would benefit from a light cleaning. Occasional scattered craquelure. Scattered touchups mainly in the upper left sky quadrant. The frame shows some age with missing gilt around all four sides but still reads well front on. I cannot tell if that was purposeful or not. Bio: Biography from American Legacy Fine Arts Ferdinand Kaufmann was born in Oberhausen, Germany in 1864. He moved to Pittsburgh with his family around 1881 where he resided for approximately forty years and became a member of the Pittsburgh Art Association. To advance his education, Kaufmann traveled through Europe from 1896 to 1902 exploring art museums and galleries. While in Paris he studied at the prestigious Académie Julian under notable artists William-Adolphe Bouguereau, Jean-Paul Laurens, and Benjamin Constant. In 1921 Kaufmann relocated to Southern California and settled in Pasadena in 1934 where he exhibited with the Pasadena Art Institute. In 1939 he became an active member of the Laguna Beach Art Association. In addition to traveling around California, Kaufmann took frequent painting trips to Arizona and New England, particularly in Gloucester, where he became a North Shore Arts Association member. Ferdinand Kaufmann passed away in 1942 in Los Angeles County. Ferdinand Kaufmann is primarily recognized for his impressionistic landscapes and marine paintings of Southern California. Many of his subjects depict Pasadena, including the city’s architecture of charming California-style red tile-roofed homes set in the landscape. I'm currently offering select paintings from my collection like this one. In order to collect new paintings, I must sell off some of my current collection. For art that I have painted, it is derived in a variety of ways. I'm a responder. I respond to light, color, design, etc. and I love painting both outdoors on location and in the studio under a controlled environment. I try to convey an idea, mood or just simply a beautiful setting. I'm inspired by a wide variety of subject matter and styles of painting and do not adhere to just one way. My paintings have won numerous awards over the years and have been collected both nationally and internationally. They can be found in three museum collections, the White House Collection and many private collections.
