The canvas belongs to the sphere of the large and fruitful workshop originated by Jacopo Da Ponte in the Venetian city of Bassano. In the workshop, starting from the models of the progenitor Jacopo, his sons Francesco and Leandro and other family members replicated and reworked pastoral, allegorical, sacred subjects and, as in the case under analysis, the series of the Four Seasons, particularly popular with collectors or the Elements.
Given the characteristics of the painting, the canvas can be attributed to a painter active in the Bassano circle. It is a version of Autumn that finds its origin in the cycles of the Seasons. There are at least three series dedicated to this subject in this area: the earliest, probably, is the one preserved at the Kunsthistorisches Museum in Vienna, where Summer and Autumn are canvases autographed by Jacopo Bassano, while Spring and Winter are known from Francesco's replicas preserved in the same museum.
The workshop then replicated the series in four canvases, now in Milan's Castello Sforzesco, dating to 1573. This was followed by independent replicas by Francesco Bassano, inferred from the first series, a complete cycle of which can be found, for example, in Palazzo Spinola in Genoa. A third series, dispersed, is documented by a plate in the "Theatrum Pictorium," a catalog of the art collections of Archduke Leopold Wilhelm, published in 1660. Another cycle, however, lacking the Summer, is preserved at the Galleria Borghese in Rome. The painting examined ties in well with the canvases of similar subject matter mentioned above, from which it departs with some details. Autumn is depicted through the depiction of the gestures and handicrafts related to the grape harvest and pressing of grapes. The ensemble is harmonious, filled with figures intent on their autumn chores and animals, built up with brushstrokes that result in violent bursts of light, with minute, luminous flickers, while the rest of the composition remains in slight penumbra. Two cattle can be seen in the foreground, a reminder that in this season the herds are brought back from summer pastures, while the large vats store the must. New wine, a symbol of joy and spring rebirth, will be formed from it. In the central part of the painting, a peasant is completing the hooping of the cask, thus securing himself from possible sagging of the wood. Characteristic of the Bassanos' production and particularly of Francesco's works is the landscape foreshortening in the background, shot through with an almost golden luminosity.
