Francis Harvey Cutting
'Carmel Coast', California Plein Air Impressionist oil, Oakland Museum, Stanford

1932-1940

About the Item

Signed lower right 'F.H. Cutting' and dated '1932-1948'. Born in Iowa in 1872, Francis Harvey Cutting moved to San Jose, California in 1893 where he studied with Arthur Hill Gilbert and Charles Harmon. During the 1920's, he maintained a studio in Pacific Grove where he became known for his landscapes of Monterey, Carmel and the neighboring Pacific coastline. In 1927, Cutting built a studio in nearby Campbell where he continued to work until his death in 1964. A prolific impressionist painter, he used a bright palette to compose vivid plein-air landscapes and coastal views of Northern California. Over a long career, Cutting exhibited widely and with success. He was the subject of numerous one-man shows including exhibitions at the California State Fair (1923, 1930-32), Stanford University Art Gallery (1925, 1928, 1933, 1939) and the Oakland Art Gallery, later the Oakland Museum, (1934, 1938). We are pleased to offer this fresh and breezy view of the dramatic Pacific coast near Carmel, California.

Path leading down. Kolomenskoye
By Simon Kozhin
Located in Zofingen, AG
This place in Kolomenskoye Park is both an observation deck and a place for paragliding. Most often, athletes begin their flights in the spring and continue until the fall. It even resembles tapestry embroidery...
