Frederick T. Sibley
by Frederick T. Sibley, Snowy landscape of North Wales

1893

About the Item

Frederick T. Sibley (1837-1912) Winter scene in North Wales Pastel on board, 122.5 x 81.5 cm With frame 151.5 x 111 cm Signed lower left "FT Sibley 1893" The work under consideration depicts a bright winter landscape that is identified with the rolling valleys of the Wales region of England. A snow-capped peak provides a backdrop for a small stone bridge suspended between the rocks that make up the rugged British landscape. The painting is part of the pictorial current called Romanticism, which took its start in the nineteenth-century German cultural and philosophical climate thanks to authors such as Caspar David Friedrich, and then spread to England with William Turner and John Constable. Romantic art was based on the principle of the sublime, that is, in the relationship between man and nature it was the latter that had the upper hand over the former, which could do nothing in the face of its beauty, capable of triggering in the human soul conflicting feelings of disquiet and mysticism. The author of the painting is identified as Frederick T. Sibley (1837-1912), an English artist who founded with other artists the Royal Cambrian Academy in the late 19th century, Britain's first artists' colony. The association emerged from David Cox's summer stays at Betws-y-Coed between 1844 and 1856. The seven men who launched the Academy were all devotees of the artist colony, many of them originally from the northwest of England from where Betws-y-Coed was easily reached by train. By 1881 the Conwy Valley in North Wales was at the height of its fame as an academy that welcomed large numbers of professional and amateur artists. The prospect of seeing the painters at work attracted many visitors, consequently the seaside town of Llandudno emerged as a center for the sale of many of these works. Established in 1881 by Queen Victoria, the Royal Cambrian Academy is a center of artistic excellence in Wales, aims to exhibit works by Academy members, promote quality emerging artists, hold historical exhibitions and provide a vibrant venue for education. In 1887 Sibley was counted among the society's academics and exhibited at the RCA's annual exhibition the painting Bridge and Fall at Nant Mill, selling for £80, and in 1890 he exhibited A Lonely Shore. Pair of landscapes Painted by Antonio Francesco Peruzzini
Located in Milan, IT
Antonio Francesco Peruzzini (Ancona, 1643/1646 - Milan, 1724) Rural landscape with river and village center Rural landscape with river and tower (2) Oil on canvas, cm 108 x 62 Expert opinion Prof. Emilio Negro Recognizable in the present pair of paintings is the hand of what Mina Gregori called "the most original and path-breaking landscape painter to emerge in the late seventeenth century," namely Antonio Francesco Peruzzini. Finally identified by Arslan in 1959 as such a "Perugino," author of a St. Sebastian in a private Milanese collection, Peruzzini has in recent times been reevaluated from his former qualification as a mere subordinate of Lissandrino (Alessandro Magnasco), in comparison with whom he turns out to be an excellent coadjutor and original landscape painter. A distant mountainous horizon, of frozen vigor, is proposed in both canvases interspersed with a spindly tree in the background that screws swirlingly to the sky. The anti-academicism and nonconformism that characterized Peruzzini's entire career appear evident here and justify in retrospect his choice of such figurative collaborators as Magnasco and Sebastiano Ricci...
