About the Item

Contemporary Twentieth Century Traditional Landscape Oil painting Fresian Cows lying in a Meadow. Landscape firmly in the Barbazon School and Dutch tradition. Fresian cattle, cows lying in a field in a river landscape, signed and framed large oil painting. FRITS GOOSEN RSMA Dutch, born 1943 Frits Goosen was born in Hilversum on 13 December 1943 and had no immediate connection to Art, however it was not long before his talent began to show as he reached secondary school and made friendships within the artistic community. Due to financial circumstances he was apprenticed as a radio mechanic and of course, had to complete military service in the Royal Dutch Navy. He went on to be employed by a shipping company, once again through financial circumstances, and stayed for eleven years, though he never gave up on his dream to paint. His first pictures sold at his father in laws furnishing shop and soon interest had grown to such an extent that he was able, with the support of his wife, to pursue a career in art. His attention has always been on boats and his style reflects the strong Dutch tradition he follows on from, especially the Hague School. He has of course gone on to develop a style unique to him that is instantly recognisable and extremely popular in Holland and in England. Since his first exhibition in 1981 all his exhibitions have been sell out successes and his work is now exhibited in the States also. His style now combines his keen powers of observation and the ever changing incidence of light and atmosphere. His work is in such demand from galleries worldwide and appreciated by numerous collectors, obtaining new works is the problem for us as there is always a core of collectors who appreciate his work and want to buy now as prices are still affordable. Landscape with White Birch by Agnes Bartlett Brown (American, 1847-1932)
Located in New York, NY
"Landscape with White Birch," is a pastoral New England Landscape painted in the Barbizon style by historic woman artist Agnes Bartlett Brown (American, 1847-1932). Painted in oil on board the painting measures 13.63 x 10.25 inches, and is signed on the verso. The work is framed in an elegant, period appropriate frame and is ready to hang. Agnes Brown and her husband, the landscape painter John Appleton Brown (1844-1902), made a formidable artistic pair. The two traveled and painted together constantly, beginning in 1874 with an extended trip to France where they were exposed to the Barbizon painting of Camille Corot (1796-1875) and his contemporaries. The couple returned to the United States the following year, where they settled in Boston. In the company of such American Barbizon painters as William Morris Hunt and Joseph Foxcroft Cole, the Browns honed their pastoral renderings of the New England landscape. As the wife of a well-respected painter, Agnes Brown benefited from her husband’s reputation, encouragement, and lifestyle. However these same privileges tend to obfuscate Agnes Brown’s independent legacy in the historical record as a painter in her own right. While Agnes Brown is rarely considered outside of the context of her husband, however, her paintings retain significant authority on their own. Landscape with White Birch, for example, carries weight as a stand-alone vignette. In Brown’s choice of an arched frame and use of expressive brush strokes to render surprising detail, this pastoral summer scene of a New England landscape ranks among those of her husband and other predominantly male members of the American Barbizon school.
