A classic example of De Monnecove's work capturing French hunting art of the time . A perfect day, the dogs waiting and the hunter perusing the landscape before setting off again.
French 19th century
He was born on March 10th 1836 in St Omer, France.
He specialised in painting landscapes and hunting scenes- these he usually did in oils.
Monnecove was the pupil of J.Palizzi and went on to paint a large body of work in a style that was certainly influenced by Impressionism.
During his career he exhibited a number of paintings in the Paris Salon between 1865 and 1881 and his work is held in the museum of St Omer with a piece entitled “Forest Pool-Hunting Scene”.

He was a figure and animal painter who was based originally in Bradford, where he lived until 1885, when he moved to Edwinstowe, near Mansfield, Nottingham. In 1901 he moved to Hampstead and then back north to Harrogate where he stayed until his death. In his later years he became a picture dealer, but in his will he referred to himself as ‘animal painter’.
Barker became a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1896. Although he called himself an animal painter he is also known to have painted ‘Roman Maidens...
