About the Item
This stunning large 19th century landscape oil painting is attributed to follower of Joseph Turner, possible George William Mote. Painted circa 1850 it is a panoramic landscape looking down across a valley, past cows in the foreground to a bridge, small hamlet and castle on a hill to the right then on into the distance and a setting sun. The detail and use of light are superb. The little hamlet glows in the evening sun and the river beautifully reflects the light. The sun is surrounded by the most beautiful pink clouds and the whole painting is just gorgeous. This is an excellent example of a large 19th century country house landscape oil painting.
Provenance. Newcastle on Tyne label verso.
Condition. Oil on canvas, 50 inches by 37 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed in a gilt gilded oak frame, 56 inches by 43 inches, in good condition.
George William Mote (1832-1909) was a self-taught artist, who worked as gardener and caretaker to Sir Thomas Phillipps, the great manuscript collector at Middle Hill, near Broadway Worcester. His early paintings, mostly of the house and gardens at Middle Hill, are painted in an evocative primitive style, which faithfully reproduces the scene. Later he became a fulltime artist and enjoyed success in exhibiting at the Royal Academy 1857- 1873, the British Institution and in the Provinces.
