About the Item
Beautiful gouache of the shoreline by Dutch artist Gerard Hordyk (Hordijk) 1899-1958. The work is in excellent condition with strong bright color and is signed lower right. Bathers can be seen along the bank. The painting is matted and unframed and measures 15 1/4"h x 18"w.
Gerard Hordijk was born in The Hague in 1899 and died in Amsterdam in 1958. This almost forgotten Dutch artist differed greatly in style, subjects and views from the painters who joined the famous art movement of the time, the so-called “De Stijl”. But there is a link between Hordijk and “De Stijl”. In 1927, when Hordijk was in Paris, he lived together with the famous artist Piet Mondriaan (who was one of the founders of “De Stijl”), in the studio complex on the Rue du Départ in Paris. In that year he made a portrait of Piet Mondriaan. The two painters became close and lifelong friendship. Despite years of friendship with Piet Mondriaan, abstract stylistic features have never taken hold of Gerard Hordijk's painting. His work remained figurative throughout his career. He was not interested in innovative painting, which was the goal of his friend Piet Mondriaan, but he 'merely' wanted to capture the reality he admired (people, landscapes, cityscapes) in a personal handwriting and self-chosen color palette.

A prominent artist in the watercolor movement known as the California Style, Milford Zornes became especially known for his application of watercolor in broad brush strokes to large sheets of paper. He was born in Camargo, Oklahoma, and moved to Los Angeles while a teenager. In Santa Maria, California, he enrolled in Santa Maria Junior College, where he had art instruction from Stanley Breneiser and lived for a period of time with him and his wife, Babs Breneiser who was an art teacher at the local high school.
Then at age 20, he began adventurous travel that took him across the United States that had him working on the docks of New York City, and then shipping out to Denmark as a merchant seaman, a job that eventually led to a tour of Europe. He returned to Los Angeles by 1930, and studied at the Otis Art Institute with F. Tolles Chamberlain, and at Pomona College where Millard Sheets was his teacher. Throughout the 1930s, he was exhibiting widely including the 1938 Art Institute of Chicago International Watercolor Exhibition, Seventeenth Year.
Zornes did murals during World War II for the Federal Arts Project of the W.P.A., and was a United States Army artist correspondent in Burma and India. Because of the distinction of his W.P.A. and other wartime artwork, he was honored with a one-person exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington DC, and one of his paintings was selected by President and Mrs. Franklin Roosevelt for the White House Collection. This attention brought him much positive publicity.
After the war, he lived in several locations in California and in 1963, Milford and his wife Pat, bought the Maynard Dixon summer home and studio in Salt Lake City, Utah from Edith Hamlin...

Grace Martin Frame Taylor (1903-1995), a native of Morgantown, West Virginia, launched a nearly forty-year affiliation with the Mason College of Music and Fine Arts, now part of the University of Charleston in West Virginia.
In 1921, Taylor enrolled at the University of West Virginia in her hometown; disappointed by the art curriculum, however, she left after just one year to attend the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. She returned to the University of West Virginia in 1924 to finish her bachelor’s degree, selecting English as her major, with an emphasis on journalism; she eventually earned a master’s degree there in 1929.
Following her graduation, Taylor went to Provincetown, Massachusetts, and renewed her interest in art under the guidance of her distant cousin Blanche Lazzell. Both Provincetown and Lazzell had gained a significant reputation for a particular kind of color woodblock printmaking known as the white line method. Grace Taylor embraced this approach wholeheartedly; for twenty-eight summers she returned to Provincetown to advance her printmaking skills with Lazzell and Heinrich Pfeiffer. In the ensuing decades, she also studied under Hans Hofmann whom she called her “very favorite modern master.”
Taylor traveled to other destinations to further her education. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, she spent time at the Carnegie Institute of Technology in Pittsburgh; closer to home, she studied at the Old White Art Colony in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia, and took lessons in portraiture in the capital city of Charleston...
