Gerrit Wijngaarden from Friesland likes to paint "the silence".
We have a very special self-portrait of this artist for the exhibition around Vincent van Gogh. Just like van Gogh, this portrait tells a story, although in a completely different style. In addition to the artist who sits in the middle, the artist's brother. With the red mustache and his father with the hat. Like the brother of van Gogh, the artist's brother has been important in the career of Wijngaarden. He regularly bought a painting from his brother.
Just like in the self-portrait, we see a hyper-realistic style in the landscapes of the Frieze artist. Yet there is clearly a painting. The contrasting colors, the spherical skies and the subtle stylistic adjustments create a tranquil magical atmosphere.

Gerrit Wijngaarden
Gerrit Wijngaarden (1936, Dedgum) is a self-taught artist. At first he only painted still lives, Gerrit Wijngaarden began to paint trompe l’oeuils, portraits, landscapes, interiors, ‘magic-realistic’ imaginaries. The red thread in his work is formed by silence, together with some sort of threat or melancholy, on the background or foreground. With his still lives the abstract values are important, like colour, form, composition, contrast and substance expression. In the landscapes and interiors, you can find the sense of life of the artist. Gerrit Wijngaarden exhibites regularly and makes free work and commissioned work.
