Giovanni Bonomi (Venice, active in the second half of the 19th century)
View with the Rialto Bridge
Oil on canvas, 37 x 49 cm
With frame 43 x 56 cm
Signed "G. Bonomi" bottom right
The genre of Venetian vedutismo developed in the early eighteenth century, coinciding with the increasing influx of those scholars and foreign artists who had wished to bring home a reminder of the lagoon's wonders. Canaletto's pioneering production first and the affirmation of the successful use of scientific means such as the camera ottica produced a solid affirmation of Venetian panoramas, which began to depopulate throughout Italy. In the 19th century various artistic currents tracing romanticisms, vedutisms and historicisms begun in the previous century also argued for the preferential role to be granted to paintings of lagoon subjects.
The present offers a romantic view of the Grand Canal with the Rialto Bridge, taken in the calm of a quiet Venetian evening. The building of the bridge dates back, in design conception, to the Middle Ages: as reported by Lorenzetti (Guide to Venice) as early as 1172, Doge Sebastiano Ziani floated the idea of uniting the two opposite banks of the canal by means of a pontoon bridge; Nicolò Baratieri fulfilled this wish in 1181, with the so-called Quartarolo bridge, named after the coin that minted tolls, or the coin, due to its relative proximity to the premises of the Mint. The haphazardness of the pontoon bridge was replaced in the 13th by a solid wooden structure, which was rebuilt several times during the following centuries; Vittore Carpaccio's Miracle of the Cross at the Rialto Bridge (Venice, Gallerie dell'Accademia, c. 1496) provides meticulous evidence of this. The bridge was later named after the Rivoalto market held there. The pressing need for continuous maintenance of the wooden skeleton, however, prompted the Council to issue a call for bids for the design and construction of its stone replacement: the competition, announced in 1554, was attended by Giacomo Barozzi da Vignola, Palladio and Sansovino. Arrangements were made for the implementation of the project by the Venetian Antonio da Ponte: construction began in 1588 and was completed in 1592.
Giovanni Bonomi, artist of the present painting, devoted himself mainly to genre painting and the more coloristically vivid Venetian vedutismo, as is the case in the present painting. A native of the lagoon city, Bonomi met with national favor by exhibiting in Rome in 1883 with Costumes of the 1700s; the exhibition experience was then repeated in 1887 at the Venetian national exhibition with Abbey, War Cattiverie and San Marco.
