About the Item

Giuseppe Pessina (Milan, 1893 - there, 1967) Plain landscape Oil on canvas, signed, 70 x 100 cm With frame, cm 94 x 123 Born Dec. 16, Pessina was Milanese by birth and education, famous for his striking views of the Lombardy Alps and the territories of the Bergamo valleys. He studied at the Brera Academy of Fine Arts, taking courses from the portrait painter Antonio Ambrogio Alciati, akin to Cremona and Boldini in the pastiness of the impasto, and Giuseppe Palanti, who was not only a painter but also a set designer, publicist and figurinist devoted to the applied arts. The rich differentiation of doctrine was followed by a willingness to participate in the major exhibitions of the time: in 1924 the artist attended the Monza Portrait Exhibition, which he followed with the Exhibition of Fighters. In 1930 he was among the stalls of Milan's Permanente; he exhibited his art again later, at the Navigli Exhibition and the Exhibition of the Society for Fine Arts and Permanent Exhibition of Milan (1938) with the painting Garden in Spring. The Manifestations of the Milan Artistic Family kept the artist busy until July 1944, when Pessina had the opportunity to organize his first solo exhibition at the Ranzini Gallery in Milan. The present painting returns airy landscapes of boundless depth, in which the bucolic aspect is surpassed by the crystalline wonder of the natural datum. The triad thus offers itself as a hymn to life and to the unexpected revelation of everyday beauty, full of inspiration and dreamlike atmospheres in every one of its smallest details.
