Wonderful Gold Country Church landscape by Gladys Louise Bowman Fies (American, 1909-2005). Signed "Fies" lower right. Unframed. Image size, 18"H x 24"L. Gladys Fies was a watercolorist, art teacher. Gladys attended the Jade Fon workshop at Asilomar in Pacific Grove for thirty years. She studied under many nationally known watercolorists, Millard Sheets, Rex Brandt and eight years with George Post who greatly influenced her work. Missions were a favorite subject matter as well as floral still life.

A beautiful watercolor painting of a brown Carmel house with a white picket fence in front by Lillie Esther (Hillman) Heebner, a Watsonville, Monterey Bay area, California watercolor artist. Unsigned, but acquired with a collection of her work. Lillie (Lil) E. Heebner was guided through life by her creativity. Even at 92, she never felt old, and often said so. She met every situation in life—including death—with ingenuity. Although born in Richmond, Lillie lived in Watsonville all her life. Her father, Frederick H. Hillman, grew up on a strawberry ranch in Pajaro, graduated from Watsonville High School in 1916, and served in France during World War I. He later worked for Martinelli's Apple Cider plant and became foreman. Lillie's mother, Esther C. Hobson, moved as an infant from Bakersfield to Santa Cruz with her family in 1901, when they founded Hobson's Bath House at the Santa Cruz Boardwalk...

The artwork (image) size is 5.75 x 8.65 inches, framed size is 13 x 15.65 inches. Custom framed in a silver decorated frame, with beige matting. It is in good condition, the paper have 3 vertical soft creases that cross the image. About the artist: Born in Santa Rosa, California to a pioneering California family, Elizabeth Hoen was known for her watercolor paintings, many of them landscapes, in impressionist style. Her father, Berthold Hoen started a trading post in the Carillo adobe, the first building erected in the Sonoma Valley. He also helped survey and lay out the city of Santa Rosa. Elizabeth Hoen is not only the first painter to have their work cataloged into the Sonoma County Museum’s collection, but she was also a prolific artist in California in the late 19th and early 20th centuries and maintained a studio during a period when California art was largely dominated by men.
