Cariot 1928 This work is archived and will be included in the forthcoming Catalogue Raisonné being prepared by Norbert Saffar. Provenance: Private collection, France Private collection, France, acquired from the above Artist biography: Gustave Camille Gaston Cariot was born in 1872 in Périgny-sur-Yerres near Paris but grew up in the Marais district of Paris, an area famously associated with artists and artisans. His father was a luggage-maker and hoped that his son would continue his trade and join the family business, but from a young age, Cariot had demonstrated a natural artistic talent and shown an interest in pursuing an artistic career. While carrying out an apprenticeship with his father, Cariot dedicated his free time to studying design and producing sketches of his native Paris and the surrounding countryside. Despite being a self-taught artist, Cariot went on to become a celebrated Post-Impressionist painter. Although Cariot never accepted the label of Neo-Impressionist, he was clearly drawn to the scientific theory and techniques of the Pointillists and Divisionists. Indeed, he is best known for his pointillist works, which reveal his awareness of the Divisionist use of brushstrokes and colour theory. Cariot enjoyed exploring divisionism’s ability to communicate the luminescence and mutability of light and colour. Alongside his use of these techniques, Cariot also developed his highly personal and unusual technique. His landscape and cityscape paintings are largely characterised by their vivid palette which gives his works an internal luminosity and his use of a thick impasto, which is meticulously applied to give his compositions a greater sense of depth and three-dimensionality. Using this hybrid technique of Pointillist and Divisionist theories and his own unique style, Cariot’s work vividly captures the myriad effects of light as it falls on trees and rivers and emanates from clouds. Cariot was also influenced by the themes and subjects featured in many Impressionist paintings, especially pastoral scenes of the French countryside, such as Monet’s 1890-1891 haystack series and Van Gogh’s undulating cypress trees, as well as famous landscapes of his native Paris. Cariot painted several series of works in Paris that feature iconic landmarks at different hours of the day and in different seasons, including the Pont-Neuf from various perspectives. It was his aim to capture and document the many shifting faces of a single view, much in the same vein of Monet’s studies of the Cathedral at Rouen. His oeuvre is largely dominated by charming countryside scenes and romantic views of Parisian rooftops and the River Seine in different seasons. After World War I, Cariot spent most of his time in Germany, and while there painted a large number of landscapes of the Rhineland. During his lifetime Cariot gained critical success for his work. His landscapes and Parisian cityscapes often featured in the exhibitions of the prestigious Société des Artistes Indépendants, Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts, as well as the Salon d’Automne and Salon d’hiver. In 1909, Cariot exhibited with La Société Moderne, a group established by the painter Emmanuel de la Villéon and often exhibited at the Galéries Durand-Ruel in Paris.

Paysage d'Automne à Nesle la Vallée by Gustave Loiseau - Landscape painting
By Gustave Loiseau
Located in London, GB
*PLEASE NOTE UK BUYERS WILL ONLY PAY 5% VAT ON THIS PURCHASE. Paysage d'Automne à Nesle la Vallée by Gustave Loiseau (1865-1935) Oil on canvas 65 X 81.2 cm (25 ⁵/₈ x 32 inches) Signed lower left, G Loiseau Executed in 1898 This work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by Didier Imbert. Painted in 1898 this oil landscape, shows Loiseau’s sophisticated approach to capturing rural landscapes. In both 1890 and 1896, Loiseau exhibited in the Impressionist exhibitions, with this piece proving indicative of the level of artistic maturity he had acquired towards the turn of the twentieth century. Provenance: Wally Findlay Galleries, Palm Beach Private collection, USA, acquired from the above in April 1975 Artist biography: Gustave Loiseau was born 3 October 1865 in Paris. A Post-Impressionist painter, he is remembered above all for his landscapes and scenes of Paris streets. Brought up in Paris and Pontoise by parents who owned a butchers shop, Loiseau served an apprenticeship with a decorator who was a friend of the family. In 1887, when an inheritance from his grandmother allowed him to concentrate on painting, he enrolled at the École des arts décoratifs where he studied life drawing. However, a year later he left the school after an argument with his teacher. While working as a decorator, Loiseau redecorated the apartment of the landscape painter Fernand Quignon (1854-1941). After he left the École des arts décoratifs, Quignon tutored him in painting. In 1890, he went to Pont-Aven in Brittany for the first time, fraternizing with the artists there, especially Paul Gauguin and Émile Bernard. After experimenting with Pointillism, he adopted his own approach to Post-Impressionism, painting landscapes directly from nature. His technique, known as en treillis or cross-hatching, gave his works a special quality. Loiseau first exhibited at the Salon des Indépendants in 1893 and at the Salon de la Société Nationale in 1895. He also exhibited at Impressionist exhibitions in 1890 and 1896. Loiseau's paintings, revealing his passion for the seasons from the beginning of spring to the harvests later in the autumn, often depict the same orchard or garden scene as time goes by. Series of this kind, which also include cliffs, harbours or churches, are reminiscent of Claude Monet. Although Loiseau did not complete many portraits, he often painted people at work: dockers together with their boats, villagers leaving a Sunday service in Brittany or arriving at the market in Pont-Aven, or even carriages in Paris driving across the Place de la Bastille and the Étoile. He is also remembered for his paintings of Paris streets...

Pluie a Venice (Venice in the Rain)
By André Hambourg
Located in Costa Mesa, CA
Pluie a Venice is painted in Hambourg's preferred palette of muted blue-green, grey, and gold with splashes of ruby red, deep blue, and emerald green. The soft colors work well for beach scenes and rainy days such as the ones portrayed in this painting. The impressionistic scene shows multiple pedestrians strolling down the boardwalk, shielding themselves from the rain with colorful umbrellas that provide pops of color and balance the overcast sky. The background contains a three-masted ship and Piazza San Marco's famous bell tower and Basilica. Hambourg uses the minimum number of brushstrokes necessary to portray ships, seagulls, buildings and people as well as reflections on the glistening sidewalk. The brushstrokes in the sky have an interesting texture that is controlled yet carefree and there is heavy impasto throughout. His portrayal is both realistic and romanticized. Hambourg was clearly influenced by the great Impressionist artists of earlier generations, perhaps none more than the one with a direct connection to his family. Hambourg's wife, Nicole Rachet, was born into a family with a large collection of works by Impressionist master Eugene Boudin. Rachet's grandfather was a contemporary and friend of Boudin's, and a collector of his work. In their later years, Hambourg and Rachet donated over 300 canvases by Boudin and other artists to the Eugene Boudin Museum in Honfleur, France. It was such a large and important gift that the collection bears...
