About the Item

Mid 20th-century oil on canvas titled 'Le Soleil Sur Les Sommets' by French artist Guy Roujon (1912-1991), signed bottom right. Presented in period wood frame. Titled and with exhibition reference number to the back of the canvas This picture called 'sun catching the mountain peaks' is typical of Roujon's naive, at times abstract/cubist, representations of his subjects. The hilltop village painted in darker although still colourful tones has just lost the last of the suns rays which now only remain on the higher hilltops lighting up the distance. Hills, houses, trees and clouds are strongly and firmly painted in blocks of a variety of colours. There is also texture to the paint, at times boldly and thickly applied to add more power to the image, highlighting the force of nature. Roujon was well known for his landscapes depicting small villages in atmospheric settings at times highly colourful, at times in more sombre tones. He also produced tablescapes and occasional figurative works. Roujon was born in Bordeaux in 1912. He became interested in art at a very young age and began producing some very successful watercolours from the age of 10 with help and advice from his father. Whilst at the Lycée Carnot in Paris he won prizes for drawing. At that time the major influence on his art was Van Gogh whose painting he admired for its powerful form and colour. Roujon's family were opposed to a career in art and he was directed towards medicine. Even so, his love of art never left him nor his passion for jazz. He would frequent bars in the cellars of St. Germain des Prés with his friends, Charles Delauney, Hugues Panassiè and Maurice Cullaz. At the age of 20 his art was quite classical in style influenced by the surrealists. Later he was seduced by cubism in particular by the work of Braque. He finished his studies in medicine and began practising but never gave up his art, painting in his spare time. He continued to visit museums, artists' workshops and to foster relationships with artists such as Aujame , Mac Avoy, Jean Souverbie, Jean Cluseau-Lanauve and Jef Friboulet. Over the years his group of friends and followers in the art world grew and became all the more important to him. In 1960 his painting turned more to abstraction for a period of around 10 years perhaps prompted by his love of poetry and music which played a role in liberating his art. In 1971 Roujon moved to Le Samonta in the department of Aveyron north of Montpellier and into his grandmother's house. Influenced by the breathtaking countryside around him he returned from abstract to figurative painting, gave up his work as a doctor and devoted all his time to painting. From that point onwards he exhibited his work in galleries in Paris, Toulouse, Millau, Montpellier, Strasbourg and Geneva. He won the first prize for watercolour at the Gallery Ramond in Millau and the first prize for painting at the Museum of Frontignan. Roujon's painting is real, true, robust and vigorous as was the nature surrounding him. There is a certain austerity to his work as he embellishes nothing in order to get to the true essence of the subject. Then all of a sudden there is a play of light which illuminates and lightens the image. Structure and density are two essential characteristics of his work that never change whatever the subject. His paintings are constructed as a builder would construct a house, solid, robust and well balanced producing a strong foundation and highlighting the force of nature. His style fluctuates between the two diverse schools of cubism and abstraction. His colours are rich and they are painted with great depth and solidity. There is an air of mystery about his landscapes which can appear lost in time. He is not capturing the landscape but the feelings and emotions that it evokes.

Mid 19th Century oil on canvas view of a Swiss valley and mountainscape by Alexander Calame. The painting is signed bottom left. The canvas is on a fine stretcher with 'keys'. The painting has been in a private collection in the North of France since the early 20th Century. The painting is currently framed but needs extensive restoration, the frame can be included at no additional cost if required. A very beautiful and expert rendition of one of Calame's iconic Swiss mountain views. Atmospheric view of light and shade, a moody sky with the sun just breaking through over a small mountain cottage retreat. Alex Calame was born in Corsier-sur-Vevey, today a part of Vevey, Switzerland. He was the son of a skillful marble worker in Vevey, but because his father lost the family fortune, Calame could not concentrate on art, but rather he was forced to work in a bank from the age of 15. When his father fell from a building and then died, it was up to the young Calame to provide for his mother. In his spare time he began to practice drawing small views of Switzerland. In 1829 he met his patron, the banker Diodati, who made it possible for him to study under landscape painter François Diday. After a few months he decided to devote himself fully to art. In 1835 he began exhibiting his Swiss-Alps and forest paintings in Paris and Berlin. He became well known, especially in Germany. He is associated with the Düsseldorf school of painting. In 1842 he went to Paris and displayed his works Mont Blanc, the Jungfrau, the Brienzersee, the Monte Rosa and Mont Cervin. Claude Venard was a notable exponent of the French mid-century post-Cubist movement. He was born to bourgeois parents from Burgogne in Paris, on March 21, 1913. At the age of 17, he enrolled and attended the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, but remained for only two days, not adhering to the school's academic style. Instead, he spent the following six years at the École des Arts Appliqués, taking evening classes and embracing the contemporary Parisian art scene, all the while becoming recognized in its circles. Not able to support himself as an artist, by 1936 he found employment as a restorer at the Louvre, further honing his artistic skills. Paris of the period was dominated by an art trend that strongly favored abstraction. Following a group show at the Galerie Billet-Worms in 1935, art critic Waldemar George declared: "Let's be young again! Painting is not dead… Its course has not stopped. Forces Nouvelles is born." Venard contributed and initially adhered to the strict disciplines of the Forces Nouvelle group. But as with many of his fellow members, he soon abandoned it seeking individual expression.
