About the Item
This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online.
In Spring in the Woods, Hazel Thomson captures the joyful stillness of early spring with vivid clarity and depth. The scene, painted in oil on canvas, is awash in fresh greens and purples, with a dense carpet of bluebells stretching across the forest floor. Tall, graceful trees sway gently in the breeze, their new leaves catching the morning light as mist lingers in the background.
With her contemporary realist approach, Thomson has a way of translating atmosphere into brushstrokes—each one thoughtfully placed to create a balanced, immersive composition. The trees stand like quiet guardians of the woodland, casting cool shadows that cut across the vibrant bluebell sea. The contrast between the foreground and the distant light creates a sense of space and openness, pulling the viewer into a peaceful encounter with the landscape.
The palette here is invigorating and full of vitality: zesty greens, periwinkle blues, and creamy soft light that filters through the canopy. It’s a painting that speaks of fresh beginnings and quiet wonder, celebrating the gentle arrival of spring with reverence and delight.
Artist Biography:
Hazel Thomson is an acclaimed artist whose creations grace galleries worldwide. Her artistic approach transcends mere painting, adopting a sculptural essence. With deliberate strokes of a palette knife, she builds layers of paint, shaping her canvases with meticulous care. Each mark is a deliberate choice, manipulated further as the paint dries, revealing the essence of her subjects.
In her artistry, Hazel conveys a profound message, celebrating not just the aesthetic allure of trees but also their pivotal role in shaping our planet's climate future. Her oeuvre blends elements of realism, contemporary flair, and impressionistic charm, resulting in a captivating fusion of styles.
Hazel's artistic vision extends beyond mere representation; she endeavours to encapsulate the essence of all four seasons and the myriad moods of different times of the day within her landscapes. Through her brushstrokes, she invites viewers into a realm of tranquility and introspection, allowing them to immerse themselves fully in the scene, experiencing the calming embrace of nature firsthand.
“My painting style has developed over the years, mostly through experiments with oils.
I paint with a palette knife and brush, and my work has three narratives: realism, contemporary and impressionistic. Look at my work closely and you will understand why it is all three styles.
I would describe my process of painting as almost sculptural, as I purposely add thick layers of paint and marks with a pallet knife, then take away or add more paint over these marks when dry, as the scene starts to take shape.
This gives my work a textural and realist look and feel, so the viewer can be lost momentarily within the painting.
I have studied for years observing our environment through my passion for trees, from the smallest detail, of an acorn right up to a complete forest changing over the years.
This gives me an intuitive instinct on how to paint trees in all their beauty and the Spirit of life they bring to the natural world.
I am passionate and conscious that my main aim in showing my work is to send out a message of not only the beauty of trees, but in all our environment in the world we need to respect nature for the future stability of the climate of our world.”- Hazel Thomson

Bluebells Woods 1, Impressionist Landscape Artwork, Original Floral Painting
By Rosemary Farrer
Located in Deddington, GB
Bluebell woods 1 is an original painting by Rosemary Farrer. At this time of year I head for the woods to paint the bluebells. The colours are very hard to capture, not quite purple, not quite blue, photographs don't quite do them justice. This is where a painting has an advantage over a photograph, a combination of cooler blues and warmer purples, side by side, mix optically and create a shimmering field of colour, flecks of lime green from the new beech leaves provide the perfect foil.
Rosemary Farrer, artists and printmaker sells with Wychwood Art online and in our art gallery in Oxfordshire. Rosemary paints in oils and also makes original prints. The prints are in no way copies of the paintings, they are conceived of, and made, as a response to the special and wonderful effects that can be achieved only through the various techniques of printmaking, whether it be the graphic, dynamic marks of a linocut, or the subtle tones and textures achievable in aquatint and etching. Design, composition and the use of colour are what excite her. She spends a lot of time drawing and painting outside, back in the studio, she will distil these ideas into strong graphic woodcuts, and linos or subtly textured etchings. Recent monotypes draw together the threads of her different media, with their graphic shapes and rich painterly colours. She studied fine art at Camberwell School of Art and The Ruskin School of Drawing, and learned printmaking at Morley College [London]. She has exhibited prints...
