About the Item
This exceptional artwork is currently on display and available for sale at Signet Contemporary Art Gallery and online.
Springtime Walk is a radiant celebration of renewal, painted in oil on canvas with Hazel Thomson’s signature blend of precision and poetic sensitivity. The piece captures a sunlit woodland in full bloom, the path winding gently through tall, slender trunks, surrounded by a sea of bluebells. Light filters delicately through fresh green leaves, casting long shadows that dance across the ground.
Thomson’s contemporary realism brings the natural world to life in a way that feels both grounded and ethereal. Each element—from the textured bark of the trees to the subtle shifts in light—has been rendered with patience and care, offering a moment of tranquility that invites viewers to pause and breathe. The soft illumination of the background suggests a quiet morning, perhaps after rainfall, when everything is newly washed and vibrant.
The colour palette is lush and harmonious, with bright greens, lavender blues, and touches of sunlight warming the distant sky. This painting offers a hopeful and uplifting experience, encapsulating the energy of springtime and the promise it brings. It’s a timeless portrayal of nature’s gentle resilience, told through Thomson’s attentive, contemporary eye.
Artist Biography:
Hazel Thomson is an acclaimed artist whose creations grace galleries worldwide. Her artistic approach transcends mere painting, adopting a sculptural essence. With deliberate strokes of a palette knife, she builds layers of paint, shaping her canvases with meticulous care. Each mark is a deliberate choice, manipulated further as the paint dries, revealing the essence of her subjects.
In her artistry, Hazel conveys a profound message, celebrating not just the aesthetic allure of trees but also their pivotal role in shaping our planet's climate future. Her oeuvre blends elements of realism, contemporary flair, and impressionistic charm, resulting in a captivating fusion of styles.
Hazel's artistic vision extends beyond mere representation; she endeavours to encapsulate the essence of all four seasons and the myriad moods of different times of the day within her landscapes. Through her brushstrokes, she invites viewers into a realm of tranquility and introspection, allowing them to immerse themselves fully in the scene, experiencing the calming embrace of nature firsthand.
“My painting style has developed over the years, mostly through experiments with oils.
I paint with a palette knife and brush, and my work has three narratives: realism, contemporary and impressionistic. Look at my work closely and you will understand why it is all three styles.
I would describe my process of painting as almost sculptural, as I purposely add thick layers of paint and marks with a pallet knife, then take away or add more paint over these marks when dry, as the scene starts to take shape.
This gives my work a textural and realist look and feel, so the viewer can be lost momentarily within the painting.
I have studied for years observing our environment through my passion for trees, from the smallest detail, of an acorn right up to a complete forest changing over the years.
This gives me an intuitive instinct on how to paint trees in all their beauty and the Spirit of life they bring to the natural world.
I am passionate and conscious that my main aim in showing my work is to send out a message of not only the beauty of trees, but in all our environment in the world we need to respect nature for the future stability of the climate of our world.”- Hazel Thomson
