About the Item
Helen Taylor (Contemporary)
The Blanket
Oil on canvas
46 x 61 cm
Helen Taylor’s practice follows an interest in belonging, connection, and journeys. She spent her formative years in the Middle East, relocating to England at the age of 16, to attend Hampstead Fine Arts College, London.
Growing up in a desert manifested a yearning for a ‘greening’ of landscape and garden. Moving to the relative flatness and sandy lanes of Suffolk provided comfort, fuel for the imagination and ultimately home – an outsider looking in but also residing within.
Taylor works partially en plein air, in part from sketches and memory. The works are enveloped in an instinctive, gestural immediacy and equally, are concerned with the graphic, expressive potential of colour. Balancing a romantic impulse with simplification of form, imperfections of application and rawness of material, the paintings are rendered in a loose, textured style. Taylor seeks to reinvigorate traditions of figurative painting and provide the viewer with a shared personal encounter.
In 2001, Taylor presented her paintings to HRH the Queen. Her work is held in private collections internationally. She has lived in East Anglia for 27 years.

Hush, Tapestry-Like Landscape Painting, Semi-Abstract Mixed Media Artwork
Located in Deddington, GB
“Hush” is part of my Tapestry series of semi abstract paintings that explore the simplification of shape, space, colour and texture in places I have visited. Some of these are specific to landscapes around my studio in Surrey, the South Downs and Devon but mostly they are a visual amalgamation of experiences, like a patchwork of memories and feelings from one or many places. Tapestry-like landscapes with bold mono-tone blocks which reflect the shadowy-shape of evergreen trees against more open hills and meadows. I see more when I’m not focused on the detail, painting intuitively with a mix of acrylics, inks, chalk and oil pastels to capture an emotive response to a place rather than the reality of a specific landscape. Brush strokes and marks are layered and carved with fluid lines that create imagined dream-like patterns. “Hush” is painted on a wood panel with muted shades of slate, moss, pebble and shell, contrasted with a bold graphic swathe of charcoal.

River. Original Statement painting, Contemporary art, Abstract Style art
Located in Deddington, GB
Original abstract oil painting on canvas, layers of dark blue space, anchored by bright pink, orange and white. Inspired by the Cornish coastal path in Zennor.
Kelly Washbourne, contemporary painter, available online and in our gallery at Wychwood Art. Kelly Washbourne’s work is of immeasurable depth, texture and colour. Every canvas represents its own journey as paint is layered and balanced to create exquisite colour relationships, provoking both thought and emotion. Taking months to complete, each piece becomes an evolving record of the painting process offering glimpses into the hidden history of its creation. She is known for the bold expression of her large pieces which are full of texture, energy and vibrancy. Her small canvases, which have become popular exhibited in grids, offer an endless variety of shades and brush strokes and create a unique artwork with every composition. Graduating from Falmouth University in 2002 with a BA Hons in Fine Art, Kelly finds her inspiration in the freedom, bravery and liberty of The New York School artists. Expressionists of the 1940s and 50s such as Franz Kline, Willem de Kooning and Helen Frankenthaler incite confidence in her use of paint. She also draws reference from the beautifully energised artistry of Gillian Ayres and Peter Lanyon. Contemporary artists such as Cecily Brown and Rose Wylie...
