About the Item
Following his flee from Paris in 1940, Hayden took refuge from the German occupation in the South of France alongside Robert Delauney and later Samuel Beckett who would become a lifelong friend. Upon returning to his studio to find much of his work destroyed, the years 1945-48 saw an intense period of production, with work exhibited at the Salon des Tuileries and the Salon d’Automne. This work is an example of his landscape painting just before he began to simplify and return to a sub-Cubist sensibility throughout the 1950s, focusing on creating depth through colour rather than form. The vividness of pigment used and the distinctive manner of depicting clouds in this example foretell elements of his later work. Similarly, the feathered and almost diaphanous detail describing the fences of the garden anticipate Hayden’s regained interest in the influence of Renoir in the late 1960s, his use of line becoming wispier.
Henri Hayden was a School of Paris painter, mainly of still life and landscape.
Hayden was born in Warsaw and studied engineering at Warsaw Polytechnic from 1902. Alongside this he studied painting at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts and, in 1905, decided to devote himself entirely to painting.
Hayden moved to Paris in 1907, then a hotbed for the European artists of his generation, and briefly studied at the art school La Palette. He travelled to Brittany most summers from 1909-18 to paint in its unique light, including Le Pouldu and Pont Aven. His first solo exhibition was at the Galerie Druet, Paris, in 1911. He was influenced by Cézanne, whose groundbreaking retrospective had been shown in the city the same year Hayden had arrived, and decided to join the Cubist movement (1915-21) where he became friends with the small circle including Braque, Gris, Lipchitz and Picasso. In 1916 the exclusive Cubist dealer, Leonce Rosenberg, brought Hayden under contract.
Becoming tired with the movement in 1922, Hayden reacted against Cubism and returned to the direct study of nature. He continued to exhibit in France, including a number of solo shows. During the German Occupation, Hayden took refuge in the South of France and, on returning to Paris in 1944, found his studio and much of his work destroyed by the Nazis.
Hayden bought a country house in 1962, near La Ferté-sous-Jouarre, and immersed himself in area, using its landscape views and places as the subjects for his paintings. For many years, Hayden was represented in London by Waddington Galleries. His works are in the collections of Musee d'Art Moderne, Paris; Petit Palais, Paris; Stockholm Museum; Budapest Musem; Barnes Foundation, Philadelphia.

Peter Greenham was a distinguished figurative painter of portraits, landscapes and incidents from domestic life. His work was both sensitive and intelligent and like himself, without showiness or pretension. He was keeper of the Royal Academy Schools and a popular figure who taught many well-known artists including Martin Yeoman, Peter Kuhfeld, Edmund Fairfax-Lucy and Jane Corsellis.
Greenham was born in Streatham and educated at Dulwich before studying English at Magdalen College, Oxford, followed by Fine Art at the Byam Shaw School of Art in Kensington from 1936-39 under the supervision of Ernest Jackson.
After leaving Byam Shaw he became a schoolmaster at Magdalen College School, Oxford and was elected an Associate of the Royal Academy in 1951 and an R.A. in 1960.
In 1964 he succeeded Sir Henry Rushbury as Keeper of the Royal Academy Schools, a position he held with distinction until his retirement in 1985. The Keeper has the responsibility of running the RA Schools and Greenham showed himself to have great sympathy and understanding for his students.
In retirement he was able to concentrate entirely on his painting and tended to paint places he knew well such as the Norfolk coast, Northumberland, Oxfordshire and Annecy as well as his wife, the painter Jane Dowling...
