The newspaper Le Nord illustré wrote in May 1890: “At the beginning of last winter, death prematurely took away a talented and promising painter, Henri Moral.”
Henri Moral was a painter born in Lille, North of France, on May 10, 1840. He died quite young at forty-nine, but was already considered by his peers as a renowned naturalist painter. He received his first drawing lessons in a sculpture workshop with Mr. Hurtrel. In 1861 he entered the École des Beaux-Arts and won several prizes: in 1869 the first prize for painting with a second-class medal, then the first prize for composition in painted sketch. In 1881, he was appointed professor of drawing, architecture and modeling in Armentières in the North. He was then also a professor at the École supérieure industrielle de Tourcoing, and an officer of the academy. Having died in 1889, Henri Moral had time to paint some beautiful paintings and to be recognized by his colleagues as an estimable painter. The large raffle (more than three hundred prizes) organized in 1890 in the large room on the first floor of the Palais-Rameau in Lille for the benefit of his family was organized by the painter Pharaon de Winter. And among the donors who contributed were the great naturalist painters of the time: Jules Breton, Carolus Duran. Commere, Agache, Edgard Boutry, Cordonnier, Denneulin, Remy Cogghe, de Winter, Harpignies, Krabansky, Leroy, Schoutteten, Weerts and Gaston Thy. The ord Illustre wrote in May 1890: "The enthusiasm with which tickets are taken is only equalled by that with which prizes are sent. In short, a raffle which is one of the events of regional life."

Our painting is very close to the art of Jacob van Strij studied and may have been painted in the circle of this artist. Jacob van Strij studied at the Academy of Painting in Antwerp and with Andreas Lens. Back in Dordrecht, he became a landscape painter. Both individually and with his brother Abraham, he painted various wallpapers for clients in Dordrecht. According to Jacob van Strij biographer Johannes Immerzeel, “His passion and concern for faithfully imitating nature went so far that Van Strij, as ill as he was (for years Van Strij was plagued with gout) he asked someone to pull his sled along the ice in the biting cold in order to make sketches for his paintings, which he then executed in his workshop ”. Van Strij used these sketches for various paintings. He was inspired by 17th century old masters, in particular Albert Cuyp...

Scottish Sea Coast of Iona
By Duncan Cameron
Located in Hillsborough, NC
Exhibition-sized painting of Iona Island coast by celebrated Scottish artist Duncan Cameron (1837-1916), this is a large and expansive 19th century landscape oil painting on canvas. Renowned for his landscape paintings, this work captures the natural light on the sea, sand and rocks with splashes of rich color under a big sky.
Iona off the west coast of Scotland, has attracted artists for for its dramatic scenery and northern light, including the Scottish Colourists who favored the fresh pure light. The cliffs and coastal rocks are reminiscent of works by Samuel Peploe and Duncan Fergusson of this fabled island.
In 1876 Cameron won a Gold Medal for landscape painting, at the Crystal Palace exhibition. The year after this painting (circa 1870s) Cameron began exhibiting in the Royal Academy, Society of British Artists, and Royal Scottish Academy, showing his work consistently from 1880. Other venues for exhibiting his work include the Glasgow Institute, Walker Art Gallery in Liverpool, Manchester City Art Gallery, and the Royal Hibernian Academy. His work is sold today in Fine Art Galleries in the UK and in Saltire Gallerie, USA. His landscape paintings are widely acclaimed, and this landscape painting of considerable size and detail is a fine example. Born in Perthshire, Cameron studied in Dundee and in South Kensington, London. He later died in Edinburgh. The highest auction sale of his work reached nearly 20,000 GBP. He was widely acclaimed as a landscape artist, painting Scottish farmlands and haystacks, coastal scenes and lochs.
In this work the colors of the sea change from blue to green with white crests of waves. The rocks have splashes of red, rust and orange, and the beach has red and green in the sand. Water laps at the edge of beach and rock. A sailboat is a focal point, with distant sailboats on the water, and a rowboat by the central sailboat. A hill rises behind the beach painted...
