J. Duncan Gleason
The Brig Pilgrim

c. 1915

About the Item

Measurements Painting 30.25 x 25.25 inches Framed 34 5/8 x 29 3/4 inches Joe Duncan Gleason (1881 - 1959) was a California Impressionist painter who was highly regarded for his maritime paintings and depictions of sailing ships and naval history. His style is characterized by dynamic compositions, rich colors, and an emphasis on the accurate movement of water and sky. The ship depicted is the Brig, Pilgrim, which sailed along the California coast in the 1830s and 1840s. It was a full-rigged ship which played a significant role in American maritime history. The Pilgrim became famous through Richard Henry Dana Jr.'s memoir Two Years Before the Mast (1840), which documented his experiences as a common sailor on a voyage from Boston to California during that period. Duncan Gleason’s passion for maritime subjects portrayed ships in dramatic seascapes with a keen eye for historical accuracy. His works are admired for their vibrant colors, movement and color of water and light, all which captured the power of the sea and the elegance of sailing vessels. The Pilgrim sailed along the California coast during the hide trade era. A replica of this famous ship was moored for many years in Dana Point Harbor, before it perished in inclement weather. A museum in Dana Point is dedicated to the Pilgrim, and to Dana. The museum also displays a copy of this painting. We are offering here the original canvas, painted c. 1915. It has been highly exhibited and published, and was part of the famous maritime collection of Richard Kelton of Los Angeles. Gleason’s work is in many fine museum and private collections nationwide. This painting is in excellent condition. It has been lined with minor retouch (if any), and retains its original hand carved and gilt wood frame. From the estate of Hollywood Star Allen Jenkins (1900 - 1974). By descent in the family. Private collection, Marina Del Rey.

Redmond was a very prominent California Impressionist known for his serene tranquil and mood-filled California coastal paintings bathed in moonlight with waves gently rolling onto the shore. As a deaf mute, he explained that without speech and hearing, his abilities to see things in a detailed and poetic way were much more honed and enhanced. He was renowned for his Impressionist landscapes, particularly those featuring California wildflowers, coastal scenes, and tonal moonlit settings. Despite his deafness from a young age, Redmond achieved significant acclaim for his art and even acted in silent films, becoming friends with Charlie Chaplin, who built an art studio for him on his large movie lot. Redmond lost his hearing due to scarlet fever as a child and later attended the California School for the Deaf in Berkeley, where his artistic talents were nurtured. He studied at the California School of Design in San Francisco before continuing his studies in Paris at the Académie Julian. He became a highly respected landscape painter, shifting between vibrant Impressionist poppy...
