Market Day, Bruges
Oil on canvas, signed & dated (18)58
Image size: 28.5 inches x 35.5 inches
Size including frame: 40.5 inches x 47.5 inches
A fabulous townscape of a market day in Bruges, Belgium by Jacques François Carabain. The work shows a number of people moving to and from the busy market square as others stop and chat.
Jacques François Carabain (Jacob Frans Josef Carabain) was born on 23 February 1834 in Amsterdam to Jacob Carbin. He studied at the Amsterdam School of Art under Jacobus Schoemaker Doyer and Valentijn Bing (1812-1895). He began exhibiting in Holland and made his debut at the Amsterdam Exhibition of Living Masters in 1852.
Carabain married Helena Theodora Ricken on 2 August 1855 in Amsterdam. They lived in Amsterdam until around 1856 when they relocated to Belgium living in Brussels. He initially painted landscapes and seascapes but after travelling around Europe began specialising in townscapes, particularly those with Medieval and Baroque architecture.
Although he went back to Holland for a time during the late 1870’s, he returned to Brussels where he became a naturalised Belgian in 1880, living in the Schaarbeek area. As well as exhibiting in Holland and Belgium, he also exhibited at the International Exhibitions in London, the Paris Salon from 1881 and the Victorian Academy of Arts in Melbourne. In 1894 he was commissioned by Mayor Charles Buls to paint a series of paintings depicting the old areas of Brussels before its redevelopment. He died on 2 January 1933 at Schaarbeek near Brussels.
His paintings are always highly detailed with accurately recorded buildings and are full of colour and life. Many of his works feature bustling streets and markets and usually include horses and carts and small dogs, such as this fine example.
Many of his paintings can be found in museums and galleries across the world including: Harvard Art Museum, Massachusetts; Hermitage Museum, Russia; Noordbrabants Museum, Netherlands; Manchester City Art Gallery; Rudolfinum Museum, Prague; V&A and Woodmere Art Museum, Philadelphia.
Presentation: The painting is housed in an original period gilt frame which is in excellent condition.

A Bustling Harbour Town
Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1863
Image size: 26 inches x 36.5 inches
Size including frame: 35.25 inches x 45.75 inches
A wonderful continental townscape scene of a bustling harbour by Ludwig Hermann. The Medieval architecture is reminiscent of North Germany and the Baltic sea area with its busy trading ports. Figures can be seen chatting to traders as ships sail around the harbour.
Ludwig Hermann or Herman was born Elias Ludwig Julius Herrmann at Greifswald, Germany in 1812 to Wilhelm and Sophie Herrmann. Although little is recorded about his early life and education, he is known to have left his home in 1831 at the age of 19, to pursue an artistic career in Berlin. There he entered the Prussian Academy of Arts where he studied under Johann Gottfried Schadow (1764-1850).
Hermann started exhibiting at the Berlin Academy exhibitions in 1836. A year later in 1837, he travelled to Paris to study under Eugène Isabey (1803-1886) and Eugène Lepoittevin (1806-1870). By 1841 he had returned to Berlin where he married Caroline Wilhelmine ‘Auguste’ Dupont on 16 October, 1841. From his base in Berlin he travelled around Europe painting views of France...

Henry Schafer was born in Hanover, Germany in 1841. Although little is known about his upbringing, he was known to have studied at the l'Ecole National de Beaux-Arts in Paris. After leaving art school, he travelled throughout Europe painting town scenes and buildings of Northern France, Belgium and Germany. By 1864, Schafer had travelled to England with his wife Theresa, to work in London where they settled and started a family. All four of their children were born in England. One of his daughters Emilie Anna Schafer (1871-1937) became a painter and art teacher.
Around 1871, the family were living at 53 Vauxhall Bridge Road and in 1881 were recorded as residing at 6, Sophia Terrace, Beulah Road, Thornton Heath in Surrey, with Henry continuing to work as an artist. By 1891, he had moved to 7 St Peters Road in Islington where he lived for the rest of his life. Sometime around the turn of the century, he became a British subject. Schafer is believed to have died in London c1914.
Many of his works depict the architecture of gothic cathedrals and churches, as in these two fine examples. He also produced interior studies of churches. Schafer's style resembles that of Alfred Montague...

The Malt Shovel Tavern
Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 13 inches x 20.5 inches
Size including frame: 18.25 inches x 25.75 inches
Provenance: Frost & Reed
A wonderful painting of figures sat outside a village inn by John Holland Senior. A wagon is shown delivering supplies as another cart drives off towards a windmill in the distance. In the foreground two people cut a log in half whilst their family looks on. The Malt Shovel Inn was most likely the one at Upper Lambourn in Berkshire. Over 500 years old, it was located on Malt Shovel Lane, and was originally a bakery, becoming an inn sometime during the mid 1700’s. It remained as a pub until its closure in 2016. The windmill in the distance was situated outside Lambourn on the road to Baydon. It was built in 1771 but was demolished around 1887 and is now the site of a farm.
John Holland Senior was a painter of landscapes and coastal scenes who was born in Nottingham around 1830. He was the son of a painter and brother to Samuel Holland also a painter and sign writer. He was also uncle to his namesake John Holland (1857-1920) whom he taught to work in charcoal and Samuel S. Holland, both of whom were artists.
By 1861, he had become a full time artist exhibiting at Suffolk Street from around this time until 1879, at the British Institution between 1865-1866 as well as exhibiting locally in Nottingham. He never married and lived for many years with his father, brother and his family at Vernon Street, Nottingham. Around 1867, he moved to Hebden Bridge in West Yorkshire where he exhibited locally. He would also often travel around the British countryside and coast to paint.
He spent a few years in West Yorkshire but by 1871 had moved back to live with his family in Nottingham. However, he spent his final years living at Trebray Lodge, Tintagel, Cornwall where he died on 7 February 1886.
A number of his works are held by the Buxton Museum, Calderdale Metropolitan Borough Council, Nottingham Art Gallery and the Williamson Art Gallery.
Presentation: The painting is housed in a new, English made gilt frame which is in excellent condition. The reverse bears an old label for Frost & Reed. Frost & Reed are a well-known fine Art Gallery, frame maker and fine art publisher founded in Bristol in 1808 by William Hill. The business was bought by John Frost in 1859 who ran it until his death in 1875. His nephew Walter Frost took over the business and in 1881 brought in William Reed...
