About the Item

This peaceful work, "Luminance", is a 30x30" oil painting on aluminum panel by artist Janine Robertson featuring a view of a crashing wave along a beach shore. Overall tones of this painting are blues and greens. Janine's use of color and technique create an atmospheric quality that is reinforced by the luminous effect from the aluminum substrate. Layers and layers of paint and glazing are applied to the metal panel, then scraped away to create different effects. Place yourself on the shores of the water on a hot summer and dip your toes in the current. About the artist: Living in Madison, Connecticut, I began my career as a muralist and trompe l’oeil painter doing significant commercial and residential installations throughout New England. Eventually I changed my focus to landscape painting in oil as my work as a muralist became increasingly detailed. In this medium I discovered a more satisfying, intimate scale for my work. It was in my exploration of landscape painting where I discovered a love of aluminum and copper as a substrate. The ultra smooth surface highlights brushstrokes and texture while adding an ethereal quality to my work. The depth and light of the reflective surface adds wonderful dimension to my paintings. Most of the inspiration for my work comes from the marshes and woodlands in the Northeast, particularly those along the New England shorelines. I often begin my painting en plein air and then complete them in my studio in order to ensure a strong composition and more effectively explore the effect of light and time on the landscape. Some of my work is also created through imagination using fragments of photos and memories to create a compelling composition.

Cathy Diefendorf, "Hidden Depth", 36x36 Lake George Adirondack Oil Painting
By Cathy Diefendorf
Located in Saratoga Springs, NY
This colorful piece, "Hidden Depth", is a 36x36 oil painting on canvas by artist Cathy Diefendorf. Featured is a lovely view of the waters of Lake George with light from the afternoon sun reflecting off. The sparkles of color dance off the ripples of water and clouds speckle the sky. About the artist: A lifelong resident of upstate New York, Cathy Diefendorf began her career as a freelance illustrator after graduating from Syracuse University with a BFA in Illustration and Painting. Working as an illustrator allowed her great flexibility as an artist. Throughout most of her career Diefendorf was represented by one of the largest illustration reps in the country, Mendola, LTD of Manhattan. For many years, Diefendorf enjoyed working on a constant and varied stream of projects commissioned by commercial clientele which included corporate murals, magazine and children’s book illustrations, product advertising such as wine labels, pharma, gameboards, tissue boxes and on and on. After nearly twenty-five rewarding years in the illustration field, Cathy decided to make a change and began to focus her professional efforts exclusively on producing fine art pieces. “It was time to paint from the heart.” Now, Cathy paints what she loves for galleries and private commissions. Her Lake George paintings...

"Summer Surf II" horizontal oil painting of waves crashing in the ocean
By Annie Wildey
Located in Edgartown, MA
The rhythm of the waves marks time, like the breath. Moment to moment, its intensity fluctuates like emotion. Thoughts linger and pass, like a veil of fog. At the shore I am reminded to be present. It provides a place for contemplation and reflection. I identify with the strength and vulnerability of the ocean when a storm is brewing or passing, when the surf is up, when the fog looms or is lifting, when the horizon is obscured, or the sky begins to clear, I find beauty in these moments of transition. I bring this experience into the studio as I interpret the smells, sounds, feelings, and energy of the water or the quiet movement of fog. The process is fluid, moving between freedom and control, accident and intention, as I push and pull the paint to convey and realize my visual and emotional experiences. BIOGRAPHY Annie is a British painter and printmaker. She moved to New York City in 1989 and worked at the British Consulate. Art remained a part of her life during those years, but in 2006 she left and begin a new chapter, returning to a life with art at the very center and enrolled in an MFA program at the The New York Academy of Art. This provided the instruction, immersion and creative freedom to develop her skills and artistic voice and proved to be a fruitful time bringing with it several awards including a Post-graduate Fellowship, Prince of Wales Scholarships, and travel awards to Normandy, France and St Barts, in the French West Indies. After the fellowship Annie left New York for the East End of Long Island and spent two wonderful years in the quiet hamlet of Orient, as Artist-in-Residence at the William Steeple Davis...
