"Juliene des pres" by Jean Marie Toulgouat (French 1927-2006) signed and dated 1993 oil painting on canvas, unframed canvas: 13 x 18 inches provenance: Galerie Tuffier, France Beautiful original oil painting on canvas by the very famous French artist, Jean Marie Toulgouat (1927-2006). The painting is signed and dated and has excellent provenance, having been exhibited with the Galerie Tuffier in France. Jean-Marie Toulgouat, who has died aged 78, was the last remaining link with Claude Monet at Giverny, the Normandy village 50 miles north-west of Paris where the artist lived and painted his famous series of water-lilies. Although not a blood relation of Monet, Toulgouat's entire life was dominated by the legacy of the great French Impressionist. Born at Giverny on September 15 1927 (the year after Monet's death), Jean-Marie Toulgouat spent his childhood years in the artist's house, where he was taught to paint by Blanche Hoschedé Monet, who was both Monet's stepdaughter and the widow of his elder son, Jean. Blanche had been Monet's only pupil; she often painted by his side and became an established artist in her own right. She also looked after the household when Monet became a widower for the second time in 1911. Jean-Marie's grandfather was the American impressionist painter Theodore Butler, who had married another of Claude Monet's stepdaughters, Suzanne. Jean-Marie was the son of the Butlers' daughter, Lily (a fashion designer for Harper's Bazaar), and Roger Toulgouat, who had independent means and designed children's furniture. Growing up at Giverny, Jean-Marie attended private school at the nearby town of Vernon. As a teenager, he and a schoolfriend built an American Indian-style canoe to use on the Seine, but ran out of timber before the craft was complete. Blanche provided the answer to their problem. In old age, Claude Monet had been in the habit of having his gardener burn those of his pictures which he had come to consider not good enough. Blanche had tried to impede this by instructing the gardener covertly to store the condemned paintings in the garage. She now told Jean-Marie that he could finish off the bow and stern of his canoe with pieces of these canvases. Thus Jean-Marie paddled up and down the Seine in a boat partly constructed from the works of Claude Monet. The canoe was later burned. During the Occupation, Monet's house at Giverny was placed out of bounds to the German troops. But when Field-Marshal Rommel was appointed commander in Normandy in 1944, his headquarters at chateau La Roche-Guyon was only three miles from Giverny, and he expressed a wish to see the house. Blanche agreed, but instructed Jean-Marie that he was not to shake hands with the Field-Marshal. When Rommel arrived on the steps of the house he saluted and offered a handshake. "I'm sorry, I can't," said Blanche. "I'm sorry, neither can I," said Jean-Marie. Rommel smiled, and replied: "I understand perfectly. Shall we now look round the house?" After leaving school, Jean-Marie Toulgouat studied architecture in Nice. He practised as an architect, then, based in Paris, as a landscape artist designing municipal parks and gardens. In 1966 he decided to concentrate on his painting, returning to his home at Giverny to produce abstracts of gardens, flowers and trees. In 1964 he had married Claire Joyes, an art historian, and together they wrote and lectured on Monet in France and in Colombus, Ohio, where Theodore Butler had lived. Claire Joyes' first two books were Monet at Giverny (1975) and Life at Giverny (1985). In the 1970s Toulgouat embarked on what might be regarded as the most important project of his life: the restoration of Monet's house and gardens and Giverny. After Monet's death in 1926 at the age of 86, everything he possessed went to his surviving son, Michel. Blanche managed the property and gardens until her death in 1947, but when Michel died in 1966 (as the result of a motor accident), it was discovered that he had bequeathed the house and its priceless contents to the Academie des Beaux-Arts in Paris; the 400 paintings, including his private collection of fellow Impressionists, are now housed in their Musée Marmottan. By 1970 both house and gardens were in a state of some disrepair. Under the aegis of the American Gerald van der Kemp (who had orchestrated the restoration of the gardens at Versailles after the war) and his wife Florence, a fund-raising campaign was launched for Giverny. Benefactors (most of them American) eventually contributed $14 million; Toulgouat was responsible for raising money in France, and, as the one person who could remember Monet's property in the days before its decay, he acted as (unpaid) consultant on the restoration of the house and gardens. Today Giverny attracts more than half a million visitors a year from all over the world. Toulgouat also acted as adviser to Daniel Terra, founder of the American Museum at Giverny. He attended the 1990 and 1999 Monet Exhibitions at the Royal Academy, appearing on television and radio in Britain to talk about the artist's work, and collaborated with David Joel on his book Monet at Vetheuil and on the Norman Coast (2002). This book, dedicated to Toulgouat and his wife, was able to repudiate some untrue stories about the early courtship of his great-grandmother Alice, who became Monet's second wife - Toulgouat was guardian of Monet memorabilia which included Alice's diaries and several lengthy tape recordings by Blanche. A kind and gentle man, Jean-Marie Toulgouat died at Giverny, in the house where he had been born, on January 10. Despite a long series of illnesses he continued to paint until a few months before his death. Condition report; very good
