About the artist:
Eugenia "Jean" Victoria Weir Martin
1906-1986
San Diego, California
Landscapes, Seascapes artist
Eugenia Victoria Weir Martin was a painter and art instructor in Southern California. She was born in Tennessee on March 7, 1906. "Jean", as she was called, was brought to La Jolla, California as a small child by her parents, and remained in that area the rest of her life.
Her Father was a businessman in the early stages of the development of La Jolla. He operated a General Store in the early village. They resided in "Windemere", which is now the home of the La Jolla Historical Society. At the age of 10 she studied art with a Mrs. Fletcher, an artist in residence at the 1916 California Exposition in Balboa Park. She also studied at the San Diego Academy of Fine Arts.
Early in her career she also studied with Maurice Braun, Alfred Mitchell, Edward Langley and other important area artists. She had a studio on Balboa Park (most likely in Spanish Village) which was open to the public.
Jean began teaching locally during World War II at Camp Callan and continued her instruction until the 1970's. As an art teacher she was featured in the December 1952 issue of "National Geographic Magazine".
Jean was a Member, and Past President, of the La Jolla Art Association (1955-57). She was also a member of the Chula Vista Art Association, San Diego Watercolor Society (of which she was a Founding Member), and the San Diego County Art Association. During her career she had over 30 solo exhibitions throughout Southern California. She signed her works "Jean Martin", or "Jean V. Martin".
She died in San Diego on August 4, 1986.

A self-taught painter born in Lyon in 1911, Jean Martin developed a style of reality painting on the bangs of the debates surrounding the realism quarrel. He exhibited for the first time at the Salon d'Automne in 1933, at the Salon du Sud-Est (Lyon) the following year, and at the Salon des Indépendants from 1935. Jean Martin's pictorial style is marked by the influence of the 16th-century German masters in the wake of Matthias Grünewald, Lucas Cranach and Albrecht Dürer, whose work he observed at length thanks to reproductions of works he kept religiously. He was also strongly influenced by contemporary Flemish Expressionism. The Laethem-Saint-Martin School, discovered in 1927 during the L'Art belge exhibition at the Musée des beaux-arts de Grenoble, was a real visual shock for the artist, and particularly influenced his painting in the 1930s.
