About the Item
This oil on linen painting by James Cobb depicts an Italian street scene. The sidewalk is shaded in a purple cast from the afternoon sun with several persons featured walking along the edge of a building in its shadow. In the background a church steeple rests near a grove of deep green Mediterranean cypress trees which stand tall in the rich blues of the sky.
James Cobb has worked out of his studio in Norman, Oklahoma for the last two decades. His work is executed in oil when painting and charcoal and conté when drawing. He attempts to paint from life and hosts a life drawing session every Friday for artists around the state. Cobb tries to stay true to the subject but is increasingly adding abstractions to his work. He paints all subject matter including still-life, landscapes, portraiture, and figures.
