About the Item
Johannes JANSON (Attributed to) Amboyna (Moluccan Islands), 1729 - Leyden, 1784 Oil on canvas 47 x 57 cm (62 x 72 cm with frame) Trace of signature lower right Monogrammed and dated on the back "1755"Inscription on the recto « Johannes Janson »
Very beautiful frame of the 18th century in gilded wood
Good condition (just a bit of thinness, a repair and a few repaints, well restored)
As for the painting by Johannes Janson exhibited in the Louvre museum, our painting is also a "typical example of retrospective pastiche - much appreciated in the 18th century. – of recognized masters of the Golden Age, the specialists in Dutch rustic landscape Potter, Adriaen van de Velde or Dujardin. Recognizable in our painting is the way Janson represents trees, and animals (the horse in particular on the left is recognizable). And also the silhouettes of his small characters painted in bright colors. This village fair is a rich composition with many characters, musicians, drummers, peasant men and women, children. The scene is very cheerful and it has the charm of the festive atmosphere of the Dutch countryside with many picturesque details represented such as the dancers with a glass or a pitcher in their hands, the dishes or baskets which circulate filled with food, the child playing with a dog or the musician with the violin who animates the assembly. The vivid colors are characteristic of Dutch 17th century genre painters with the reds, yellows, blues and oranges.

Jacob VAN STRIJ (Entourage of) Dordrecht, 1756 - 1815 Oil on panel 46 x 60 cm (64.5 x 79 cm with the frame) Inscription on the back “Van der Eyden? » Very beautiful 19th century frame in gilded wood Very good condition (only a few stains)
Our painting is very close to the art of Jacob van Strij studied and may have been painted in the circle of this artist. Jacob van Strij studied at the Academy of Painting in Antwerp and with Andreas Lens. Back in Dordrecht, he became a landscape painter. Both individually and with his brother Abraham, he painted various wallpapers for clients in Dordrecht. According to Jacob van Strij biographer Johannes Immerzeel, “His passion and concern for faithfully imitating nature went so far that Van Strij, as ill as he was (for years Van Strij was plagued with gout) he asked someone to pull his sled along the ice in the biting cold in order to make sketches for his paintings, which he then executed in his workshop ”. Van Strij used these sketches for various paintings. He was inspired by 17th century old masters, in particular Albert Cuyp...

Villagers in a Landscape - Flemish 17thC art figurative landscape oil painting
Located in London, GB
This fantastic Flemish 17th century Old Master oil painting is by Thomas Van Apshoven. It was painted circa 1650 and depicts a village with figures outside a tavern, eating, drinking and dancing. Beyond are more dwellings, villagers and animals, all under a blue summer's sky. The detail, brushwork and vibrant colouring are superb. This is an excellent example of Apshoven's work and a typical subject he loved to paint.
Provenance. Leominster estate.
Wax stamp verso.
Condition. Oil on panel, 22 inches by 17 inches and in good condition.
Frame. Housed In beautiful gilt frame, 30 inches by 25 inches and in good condition.
Thomas van Apshoven (1622– 1664) was a Flemish painter known for his landscapes with peasant scenes and genre scenes in interiors. His genre scenes depict village festivals, the interiors of taverns, village scenes or landscapes with peasants engaged in various activities, singeries, guardroom scenes and laboratories of alchemists. Some still lifes have also been attributed to him. His themes and style are close to that of David Teniers the Younger. He was born on 30 November 1622 in Antwerp as the eldest son of Ferdinand van Apshoven the Elder and Leonora Wijns. His father was a painter who had studied with Adam van Noort and had become a master of the Antwerp Guild of Saint Luke in 1596. No paintings by his father are known. His younger brother Ferdinand van Apshoven the Younger became also a successful painter. Thomas studied under his father. Some sources state that he became a pupil of the prominent genre painter David Teniers the Younger. It is more likely, however, that he was an imitator of Teniers. He was registered as a 'wijnmeester' [son of a master] in the Guild of St. Luke of Antwerp in the guild year 1645–1646. He married Barbara Janssens on 22 March 1645. The couple had four children. The godfathers of the children included the painters Victor Wolfvoet...

The stop of a traveler on horseback near a post station
Oil painting on canvas
45 x 55 cm
In frame cm. 55 x 65
In this pleasant painting, depicting a knight parked near a post station, the Flemish tradition is based on a strong Italianizing sensitivity, especially by observing the setting and its peculiar brightness.
The mixture of genres and the particular style of execution make it easy to trace the authorship back to a Nordic author but active in Rome, or strongly influenced by the style in vogue in the Eternal city, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: we are referring, in in particular, to a follower of the Antwerp Simon Johannes van Douw.
The chromatic elegance and refinement with which he outlines the figures are typical aspects of his painting.
The scene takes place outside a cottage, probably a post office for travelers, where a modest family divides the tasks by assisting the knights. We see a young boy who hands water to the horse before he sets off again, the father is preparing to feed him with straw and the mother who instead takes care of the little son.
The Italian reminiscences, evident in our painting, have been absorbed by many Northern European authors such as Nicolaes Berchem, Philips Wouwerman or Johannes Lingelbach, all inspired by the leader Pieter van Laer...
