About the Item

John Folinsbee (1892-1972) was born in Buffalo, New York and, after finishing his studies at the Art Students League in 1916, moved to New Hope, Pennsylvania where he joined a renowned colony of Impressionist artists. His paintings of riverside landscapes and industrial scenes won extensive recognition in numerous exhibitions throughout the United States and earned Folinsbee membership in the National Academy, among many other distinguished artistic societies. Beginning in the 1930s, Folinsbee frequently traveled to Maine, where his work took on an increasingly stormy atmosphere as he strengthened his brushwork and intensified his colors. Folinsbee participated in numerous exhibitions from 1913-1970 and was the recipient of many medals, prizes and awards. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Rhode Island School of Design, National Academy of Design, Phillips Collection, Corcoran Gallery of Art, Museum of Fine Arts in Houston, New Jersey State Museum, Princeton University Art Museum, Philadelphia Art Club, Reading Art Museum, National Art Club, and James A.
