About the Item

In this Oklahoma landscape, a stark, primitive church with steeple is seen from its side with three stained glass arched windows and blank neon sign with arrow in the foreground. The white frame church is set against a bright blue cloudless sky. The sun's reflection and shadows are prominent against the surface of the church almost hidden behind the sign. Predominant colors in the painting are the white church against the intense blue sky with the grey geometric shapes of the church and steeple roofs and sign. The painting is in excellent condition and is unframed. John Wolfe is originally from Davidson, Oklahoma having graduated from Southwestern Oklahoma State University with a degree in Art Education and a M.Ed. from the University of Central Oklahoma. John taught art in public schools for 35 years and was an adjunct art faculty at Rose State College and Adams State University. John’s work has been exhibited extensively across Oklahoma and the surrounding region at venues including the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, the Philbrook Museum of Art, the Oklahoma State Capitol, the Hot Springs National Park Sculpture Invitational and the National Weather Center Biennale. Since his retirement from teaching in 2005 he is a full-time studio artist painting and sculpting. His most recent series of acrylic paintings are architectural in nature and his current focus is a new group of figurative mixed-media sculptures.

Artist Comments
Doug says of this pastoral American landscape, "On Highway 2 along the Androscoggin River in Maine is the village of Rumford Center, where there is a small United Church. Its simple design and white facade are an iconic symbol of 19th century America. The church hasn't changed over the years, but the surroundings have. This painting is how I perceive the church and things were back in the simpler times when agriculture was the primary livelihood of its parishioners."

"Gingerbread Church" Oil Painting of Countryside Church signed by Robert Richter
By Robert Richter
Located in Milwaukee, WI
"Gingerbread Church" is an oil painting on wood by Robert Richter, signed on the verso. The frame was created and hand-carved by the artist, making it an integral piece of the work of art. The painting depicts a country church on top of a pale green grassy hill, surrounded by green shrubs and bushes of various tones. The sky is pale near the horizon line, transitioning slowly to a deep, saturated blue at the top of the image, and a few clouds float on through. The church is indeed reminiscent of a gingerbread house...
