People are seen sitting on benches, walking, or simply enjoying the warm daylight. In the background, the sea, a rocky hill, and a white sail reinforce the identity of the setting. The trees in the foreground cast dappled shadows on the sand, and a Catalan flag waves gently in the breeze, adding a symbolic local reference. The brushwork is agile and spontaneous, and the vibrant colors reflect Amat's mastery in capturing Mediterranean light and atmosphere. This type of scene was recurrent in Josep Amat's oeuvre, especially during his extended stays in Sant Feliu de Guíxols and other coastal areas. The painting conveys serenity and a sensitive, affectionate gaze toward ordinary life. Artist Biography: Josep Amat Pagès (1901–1991) Josep Amat Pagès was a prominent Catalan painter of the 20th century, born in Barcelona. He trained at the Llotja School of Fine Arts and was deeply influenced by Joaquim Mir, whom he met in 1924. In the 1930s, he traveled to Paris, where he discovered the work of Albert Marquet and Raoul Dufy, whose color and compositional approaches shaped his evolution. He exhibited regularly at Sala Parés in Barcelona for over four decades and served as a professor of landscape painting at the School of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi from 1941 to 1971. Amat focused on urban and marine landscapes, especially scenes of Barcelona and the Costa Brava, such as Sant Feliu de Guíxols, where he spent long periods. His style evolved from impressionism to a more personal language, marked by loose brushstrokes and vivid color, with influences from fauvism. Awards and Recognition: Third Medal at the National Exhibition of Fine Arts (Madrid, 1940) Grand Sant Jordi Prize (1955) Creu de Sant Jordi (1988) His work is part of major public and private collections, including the Carmen Thyssen-Bornemisza Collection. Artistic Influences Josep Amat Pagès’ pictorial development was shaped by key artistic influences, which defined his visual language, especially in his handling of light, color, and everyday scenes: 1. Joaquim Mir (1873–1940) A decisive figure in Amat’s artistic path. Mir’s lyrical and spiritual approach to the Catalan landscape inspired Amat’s atmospheric and color-rich interpretations. 2. Albert Marquet (1875–1947) Discovered during Amat’s travels to Paris in the 1930s, Marquet's subtle compositions and color harmonies influenced Amat’s simplified and luminous coastal scenes. 3. Raoul Dufy (1877–1953) Dufy’s decorative freedom and joyful palette encouraged Amat to embrace a more liberated use of color and expressive brushwork. 4. Fauvism and Post-Impressionism These movements inspired Amat's intuitive color usage, compositional freedom, and expressive interpretation of reality. 5. Catalan Luminism Although more modern in his approach, Amat carried on the legacy of Catalan luminists such as Eliseu Meifrèn and Santiago Rusiñol, with his focus on capturing the unique light of the Mediterranean coast.
