About the Item

Title: View of Cadaqués Artist: Josep Maria Vayreda Canadell (1932–2001) Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 50 × 61 cm (19.7 × 24 in) Framed dimensions: 77 × 88 cm (30.3 × 34.6 in) Signature: Signed lower right: “Vayreda C.” Condition: Excellent. The painting retains its original surface without overpainting or restorations. The frame, crafted in fine wood with a textile liner, shows only minor signs of age. Provenance: Private collection, Sitges. WORK DESCRIPTION A magnificent view of the old town of Cadaqués, depicted with its characteristic cascade of whitewashed houses descending toward the Mediterranean Sea, crowned by the church of Santa Maria. Vayreda approaches the composition with clear geometry, pure volumes, and a harmonious color palette dominated by off-whites, ochres, earthy tones, and soft blues. In the foreground, the rural path and vegetable gardens bordered by stone walls create a transition between the agricultural surroundings and the urban core. The brushstroke is restrained and measured, with precise execution that enhances the atmosphere of serenity and order. This work epitomizes the artist’s most recognizable style, midway between late Noucentisme and a lyrical, structured realism within the Catalan landscape tradition, yet with a contemporary gaze. ABOUT THE ARTIST: JOSEP MARIA VAYREDA CANADELL (1932–2001) A member of one of Catalonia’s most influential artistic dynasties, he was the grandson of Francisco Mariano Vayreda and a direct descendant of the renowned Joaquim Vayreda, founder of the Olot School. Josep Maria Vayreda studied at the School of Fine Arts in Olot while also pursuing a degree in Law, though painting remained his true vocation. From 1958 onward he consolidated a refined figurative style marked by clear construction, clean perspective, and remarkable chromatic balance. Throughout his career, he painted landscapes of Cadaqués, Tossa de Mar, Paris, London, Portofino, and Venice, with Cadaqués being one of his recurring themes. He signed his works as “Vayreda C.” to distinguish himself within his prolific family. His work has been exhibited both in Spain and abroad and is represented in numerous private collections. On the international market, he is valued for his compositional solidity and meditative character. RELATED ARTISTS Vayreda’s style, noted for its formal clarity and balanced lyricism, recalls: Rafael Durancamps, for his structured Mediterranean quality. Joaquim Mir, in his more ordered and luminous phase. Ramón Rogent, for the geometric refinement of volumes. Josep Mompou, for his chromatic serenity and whitewashed architecture. Francesc Gimeno (in his brighter period), for his ability to capture static atmospheres.

Study from Nature Made in Montfaucon 1846 (Etude d'après Nature Faite à Montfaucon, 1846) François Bonvin (French, 1817-1887) Oil on canvas, original hand carved wood frame. Signed, dated and inscribed F. Bonvin 1846 a Montfaucon (ll); inscribed indistinctly Etude... F. Bonvin...montfaucon on the stretcher 6 3/8 x 8 5/8 (9 1/2 x 11 1/2 frame) inches Provenance: Ex Collection Auguste Péquégnot Paul Prouté André Watteau Charles Sadler Galerie Berès, Paris Exhibited: Paris, Galerie Beres, Francois Bonvin, Nov. 20, 1998 - Jan. 9, 1999 Literature: International Herald Tribune, Nov. 28-29, 1998, p. 9, illus. Bonvin's work has been compared with that of the eighteenth-century artist Chardin, whom Bonvin greatly admired, and from whose work he often borrowed particular motifs. Amongst the artists he personally encouraged were Théodule Ribot and Fantin-Latour. He was one of a group of artists who challenged the idea that still-life was a mode of artistic expression inferior to the lofty genre of history and religious painting. Bonvin championed the Realist conviction that everyday subject matter was the trues form of artistic expression. Bonvin was known for keen observation skills and great restraint. In his paintings, you can almost feel the moment between breaths as the subject matter is contemplated and then committed to canvas. This a superb, very personal and very quiet study of the village of Montfaucon on what appears to be an afternoon in the Argonne region in Northeastern France known its deep valleys and dense woodlands. François is one of the most interesting painters of the 19th century. Bonvin was born in humble circumstances in Paris and had a very difficult childhood. He was the son of a police officer and a seamstress; when he was four years old his mother died of tuberculosis. Young François was left in the care of an old woman who underfed him. Soon his father married another seamstress and brought the child back into the household. Nine additional children were born (one of whom was his half-brother, the painter Leon...
