About the Item
Joseph Kardonne (1911-1985). Ocean Beach, Fire Island, NY, 1946. Ink on paper, measuring 9 x 12 inches. Signed, dated and titled lower right. Unframed
Born in Newark, New Jersey in 1911, Joe Kardonne first showed an interest in art at an early age. At 15 years old he turned professional by painting murals for a large department store in his hometown. He formed his own business and found success in the commercial art field with the Kardonne Advertising Agency. In the 1930's he branched out into photography. His photographs, even today, could be considered cutting edge. He soon discovered that his true passion was painting and decided to devote his life to the fine arts. He joined the Art Student's League in New York City where he painted along side such art-world legends as Thomas Hart Benton and Jackson Pollack, among others. Joe traveled the globe painting the exotic locations he visited and his work can be seen in many public and private collections all around the world.
In 1986 Joe retired to Ocean City New Jersey and set up a studio at 500 Bay Ave. He painted day and night always evolving and changing styles and points of view like the true master he was. He worked proficiently in all mediums and developed his very own "isms" that included Subtractionism, Explodism and Googleism. Joe found a local "family" at the Ocean City Fine Arts League where his inspiration was welcomed and his impact is still felt today. When Joe died on March 3rd, 2005, two still wet paintings were left propped against the wobbly wooden legs of a desk in his studio.
Joe was a philosopher and an accomplished musician as well as a brilliant artist whose body of work is phenomenal. The importance of his contributions will become even more apparent in the years ahead as his influence continues to impact the world of art.

A Cubist, Untitled Mural Study of a City Scene by Artist Rudolph Weisenborn
By Rudolph Weisenborn
Located in Chicago, IL
A graphite on paper, untitled mural study, Cubist city scene by important Chicago Modernist artist Rudolph Weisenborn, ca. 1940. Artwork size: 9 3/4" x 11 3/4". Archivally matted to 16" x 18". Provenance: Estate of the artist.
Rudolph Weisenborn was born in Strassburg, Germany in 1881, but was orphaned at the age of nine. He was taken-in by Mid-Western farmer Thomas Westaby and spent his early years in Wisconsin, Iowa and North Dakota. Weisenborn first attended the University of North Dakota in 1898, then the Students School of Art in Denver. Various accounts have him working out west as a gold miner and cowboy.
Around 1912, he settled in Chicago and worked as a window designer for Marshall Field’s. Weisenborn is best known as the founder of the Chicago No-Jury Society of Artists. The group was founded because many artists could not get their work accepted into the mainstream Art Institute shows. Weisenborn is quoted as saying that he harbored feelings of disdain for any jury and that his own paintings were frequently rejected by conservative jurors. He was also involved and helped found other radical artist’s groups such as the Salon des Refuses, Cor Ardens and Neo-Arlimusic. In 1936, he helped found the New York-based American Abstract Artist’s Group. He created the only abstract mural for the 1933 Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago and also worked for the Federal Arts Project in the Easel Division. His WPA murals can be found in Crane Technical High School and Nettlehorst Elementary School in Chicago, IL. In 1945, Chicago businessman Herman Spertus...

John Woodsum Hatch
1919-1998
During his fifty-year career as an artist, John Woodsum Hatch explored the people, the landscape, and the seascape around him. From his extensive travels to his years in New Hampshire, he developed a body of work that captures a sense of place. Through watercolor, ink and sand, he depicted the grandeur of the White Mountains. The crisp light and distinct topography of the Isles of Shoals and Great Bay Estuary are precisely and clearly documented in acrylic and tempera paintings. His ability to convey the sheer scale and longevity of the mountains and sea, and by comparison the fleeting nature of human life, conveys in a not-so-subtle way that the natural environment is to be revered and preserved.
Hatch took his first teaching job at the University of New Hampshire in 1949, the same year he graduated from Yale University. He never left. A former student, Sam Cady, described his contributions: “He was a wonderful mix of jokester and sage. A teacher who obviously loved people, loved teaching, and had a great gift for it.” After retiring in 1985, he was made an honorary Professor Emeritus at UNH.
Hatch contributed to New Hampshire's cultural life in three areas: his teaching, his art, and his community service. His effectiveness in these three areas can be traced his commitment to give something of himself to help others. Many artists teach by necessity and resent it as a drain on their creative energies but Hatch found his greatest fulfillment from a combination of teaching, making art, and being deeply involved with his community as an art historian and as an environmentalist.
Hatch’s work can be seen in numerous public collections, including: the Addison Gallery of American Art; DeCordova Museum; Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts; State of New Hampshire's Living Treasures Collection, and the Portland Museum of Art in Maine. John Woodsum Hatch, New Hampshire's 1997 Living Treasure Award recipient, died on August 6, 1998, at the age of 78.
Hatch was a draftsman, an artist and a muralist. His works can be found in public and private collections throughout the region. He exhibited at the New Hampshire Art...
