"Was painted in a remote village in late afternoon.
I don’t think the few folks there had ever seen anyone painting before.
It was all quiet and we were painting away in silence when a very small boy emerged from the hut to relieve himself and had not seen us across the pond under the trees until it was too late.
He took off like a flash leaving us all in stitches."

China's Crown Jewel; Recent Paintings by American Artists, American Legacy Fine Arts, June 21 – July 28, 2019
Exhibition Description
The rapid transformation of Southern China’s Guangzhou province from an agricultural region into a global leader for international trade has truly created a feast for the eyes, juxtaposing charming Chinese houseboats floating along the Pearl River Delta against a backdrop of imposing skyscrapers. The expeditious changes that have occurred since the 1980s have caught, in particular, the attention of artists who once lived in the region – some while training at the prestigious Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts. They now find themselves fondly reminiscing about the pristine countryside that they used to explore. In recent years, these Chinese artists, who now call California home, have traveled back to their native land to capture in artwork glimpses of both the past and the continually evolving present of this sprawling port city that has embraced Western influences.
Accompanying the Chinese-American artists on these plein air painting expeditions have been their American counterparts, many of whom had never visited China – let alone painted in the world’s most populous country. This exhibition features more than 40 paintings that resulted from these trips, revealing a range of fascinating perspectives on life in China’s third largest city.

Joseph Paquet
Joseph Paquet, while pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts at the School of Visual Arts in New York, had the good fortune of finding mentors in artists James McMullan and John Foote who opened his eyes to the joys of drawing the human figure. After graduating, Paquet met another major influence in his life, John Osborne, who was uniquely gifted artist and teacher. Osborne believed that a landscape painting should begin on location, but that its poetic essence should be completed in the solitude of the artist's studio. Paquet experienced a demanding and rewarding apprenticeship, in which he learned to fuse field studies with the image he could see in his mind's eye. Increasingly however, Paquet is creating most of his work from life, believing that the direct correspondence with nature increases the potential for greater feeling. "Intellect, he says, doesn't keep one warm at night." He has been featured in the Washington Post Sunday Magazine, The Artist's Magazine, American Artist, Southwest Art and Plein Air Magazine. Paquet's awards include both Artist's Choice and Collector's Choice from The 2007 Laguna Beach Plein Air Invitational as well as the 2008 Alden Bryan Memorial Prize from The Salmagundi Club of New York, the First Place in Landscape from the Richeson 75: Artist's Choice Competition and The Edgar Payne Award for best Landscape at the 97th Annual Gold Medal Show at the California Art Club. Paquet is a Emeritus Member of The Plein Air Painters of America, The Salmugundi Club and an Signature Member of The California Art Club.

By Peter Adams
Located in Pasadena, CA
Provenance
Acquired by the gallery directly from the artist
Description
This plein air oil painting depicts the uniqueness of Anacapa Island in the chain of Southern California’s Channel Islands archipelago. Anacapa was formed by volcanic eruptions. Its desolate landscape is dominated by a distinct geology of steep precipices and jagged rock formations. From this elevated viewpoint, Adams portrays the location known as Cathedral Cove with its outcropping spires and massive kelp beds that hug the shoreline. The peak of the middle island of Anacapa is visible in the distance, and further out to sea is Santa Cruz Island...

"The dramatic Scenery surrounding Ojai and the coastal range made for some tough choices as to what to paint. Add to that, the changing light throughout the day and the marine layer coming and going, made options even greater. I have always been attracted to waterways when scouting for paintings. This scene overlooking the Ventura River deeply spoke to me as a big fan of the geology and plant life of the Ojai Valley."

"This scene was inspired by a trip to Tejon Ranch nearly 10 years ago with a small group of artists from the California Art Club. The golden color offers a different take on “California gold’ and is very much like the the foothill scenery near my home in Angels Camp."
