About the Item

Vintage Rural Landscape Snow Scene entitled "Winter Cold, Farm Idyll" by German Artist, Karl Heinz Stienen (1918-2002). Graduate of the Dresden Academy of Fine Arts. A serene winter scene with rich detail, glowing light, and nostalgic charm. Art measures 21 x 15 inches Frame measures 25 x 19 inches This picturesque winter landscape painting exudes a timeless charm, transporting the viewer to a serene countryside scene. The artist skillfully captures the crispness of a winter day, with bare, snow-dusted trees framing a quaint, thatched-roof cottage nestled amidst the tranquil surroundings. The delicate interplay of light and shadow creates a soft, glowing ambiance, with the warm hues of the cottage contrasting beautifully against the cool tones of the snow and sky. In the distance, a towering church spire rises gracefully, adding depth and a sense of narrative to the composition. The inclusion of small, lively figures—a couple walking along a snowy path and skaters gliding across a frozen pond—infuses the painting with a sense of life and community, evoking nostalgic memories of simpler times. This piece would make a stunning addition to any collection, celebrating the beauty of nature and the tranquility of rural life during winter. Its detail and warmth create a captivating focal point for any room, offering a perfect blend of artistry and emotional resonance. Born in 1929 in Homberg, Karl-Heinz Stienen began his increasingly successful painting activity in the 1950s under the guidance of Prof. Pozsony and training by Prof. Notze in old master painting style in open-air and studio work. The old masters and especially the Klever School, here excellently B.C. Koekkoek, and the Lower Rhine landscape fascinated him. In the meantime, the representation of trees and landscapes has found a perfection that allows comparisons with the mentioned old master's works and has found wide recognition. The artist, known at home and abroad, has further developed his skills on study trips, especially in northern Italy and Spain, and has perfected the glaze technique, which is excellently in earth colours. His oil works convey peace and warmth and leave an unusual observational gift. Recognise empathy and sensitivity with unmistakeable peculiarity. The elaborated and detailed works, whose light moods fascinate, can be found in well-known galleries and have, for example, led the art critic Dr. Ulrich Gehre to the following typical picture description: New master Karl-Heinz Stienen: Rhine near Ruhrort The Rhine romance of past times, which the artist impressively combines with the signatures of the beginning of the industrial age. is the subject of this unusually high-quality picture. Karl-Heinz Stienen, born in Homberg in 1929, thus proves his considerable talent. also in our days to create landscape in a figurative manner and old master-influenced painting. Karl-Heinz Stienen has successfully oriented himself to the painting art of the old Dutch neighbours of his home and prefers in his subject the warm tones of the palette laving between brown, ochre and green grations. The design of the slightly cloudy sky above the lively Lower Rhine river region in delicate pastel tones impressively proves the artist's colour mastery. With this picture, which is a demanding art-ribs K.-H. Stienen Rhein-Nostalgie in a faithfully sympathetic way. It recalls the past, which in the hard rhythm of work of the industrial present already shows itself like a piece of history. The presentation of circumstances. He masters the mood and atmosphere of a river scenery of yesterday in an impressive way with the legitimate colour-compositional means of the modern painter."

19th Century winter landscape oil painting of figures in a village
By Nils Hans Christiansen
Located in Nr Broadway, Worcestershire
Nils H Christiansen Danish, (1850-1922) A Winter’s Evening Oil on canvas, signed Image size: 11.5 inches x 23.25 inches Size including frame: 16.25 inches x 28 inches A beautiful winter landscape scene of a village covered in snow at sunset. A mother and son carry firewood back to their nearby cottage whilst other figures continue on home past the lake. In the distance, a church spire is silhouetted against the warm colours of the disappearing sun. Nils or Niels Hans Christiansen was a well-accomplished painter born in Esbjerg in the Jutland peninsula of southwest Denmark on 22 July, 1850. He specialised in winter landscapes and moonlight scenes and was interested in the effects of light, often painting the sunrise and sunsets against his native land. He first came to England in 1863 for the Royal Wedding of the Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandria. Although he worked mainly in Denmark and Norway, he spent some time in England where he is believed to have exhibited with many of the leading art galleries in London. In addition to exhibiting in England, Christiansen also exhibited in his home country at the Royal Academy of Copenhagen where he became a member. He seems to have settled in England and on 10 September 1887 he married Alice Dickens at York Square, Stepney. Together the couple lived at 36 Dempsey Street, Mile End with their children. One of their sons, Albert Edward Christiansen (1887-1927) also became an artist. Christiansen’s success brought him royal connections and he was given a Grace and Favour apartment at Windsor by Queen Victoria. By 1901, he had become a British subject and had moved to 15 Queens Road in Plaistow, West Ham where he spent the rest of his life. He died in 1922 at Plaistow, aged 71. His paintings are always beautifully drawn and with the inclusion of figures give added interest to the viewer. A number of his works can be found in museums and art collections in England including Epping Forest...
